Mago moved slowly into the raiders camp - so as to avoid to appear either threatening or nervous – not to mention stumbling over the hapless prisoners. He could see now that they were tied together – nothing too restraining, just enough to make any attempt at flight too slow and cumbersome to go unnoticed. Some moans, arms grasping at him. A guard stepped out of the shadow and clubbed the guy with the blunt end of his spear. But otherwise he took no notice of the visitor. Whatever else, these raiders seemed to be supremely confident in themselves.

They didn’t act like raiders. That kind of people always had some unruly, uneasy violence to them. Then what were these?

There was some shuffling as the slaves crawled away from the fireplace, probably to avoid more beating and to make way for him – and for her. His attention had been drawn to the miserable creatures at his feet and the enigmatic guards – now, with the obstacles making way, he did look up.

Of course he had come across a number of hard-working, stocky girls down at the harbour and the market stalls that were quite capable to wipe the floor with some insolent customer. Fun enough, but they were usually thick-limbed wenches with the overall shape of an Egyptian amphora. In general though, roman culture took a dim view on this kind of behaviour.

But he had never come across any like this one. At first she had seemed lithe and young, stepping lightly over a huddled up prisoner, slim, with pale skin, huge dark eyes and long black hair, some barbarian witch. But now he could see that she was much taller than he had assumed, on eye level with himself, but sinewy and built like a gladiator, and he wasn’t quite as sure about her age now.

Most tribeswoman grew old before they reached thirty, as Lucius had quickly figured out on their travels, and he’d put her quite below that, their own age. But with her prominent features and stinging eyes, he was at a loss.

He became aware, that they were staring at each other for quite some time, actually. He felt a chill running down his spine as she reached out to touch his face. Involuntarily he grabbed her arm, and for a crazy moment he felt like he ought to know her, but it passed, and there was the hint of an embarrassed smile on her lips and corners of the eyes and he felt compelled to answer that smile.

“This morning…” he began slowly, “this morning I was naming ourselves reckless fools, trying or luck with this god-forsaken wilderness, but –“, he tried to keep a straight face, “luck smiles on audacity, it is true, else I wouldn’t have met you.”

She gave him an amused chuckle, clearly taking both parts of the flattery. He felt some of the guards turn their heads, more than he could see it, but their faces remained unreadable in the darkness.

“Well, not everyone praises luck for meeting me.” She looked down at the frightened prisoners. “Actually you’re among a select few with that sentiment. You’re from the coast? Merchants?”

Mago nodded. Some more guards emerged from the forest shadows. Things were still on a knife’s edge, but he couldn’t help thinking of her, to the exclusion of anything else. For once he had Lucius’ part.

“So join us. That’s what you came for. Your luck suits you well. What does it look like, this luck of yours?”

“Tangled? Tangy?” Her eyes narrowed. “Some slaves earning me some good silver – or else? In between you and me, fools luck.”

The girl laughed. “A fool? You look like one I knew once...” She muttered a few words in what was likely her own tongue. The guards seemed to be uneasy about something. He could feel their eyes on his back. Mago tried to assess the situation, but he couldn’t lay down a clear thought in her presence. Lucius seemed on the edge, too, hopefully he did nothing rash.

She raised her eyes, looking at him as if she had come to a conclusion.

“So. You’re going to trust in your luck?”

He nodded. “More than ever.”

“Good. Rest with us. Get your cart and that ox that is raising half of the forest."

Obviously she was pretty aware of their situation.

"Send your friend. Amuse him a bit or he’ll likely hurt himself with that knife of his.”

Which was probably good advice. Mago filled in Lucius who still looked worried. But he had glanced at the woman, then at Mago, and given him just so slight a wink and a grin. Then he disappeared into the darkness.

She had been giving orders it seemed, but now she stepped to Magos side. “We’re not far from out camp. I think you’ll profit nicely. Traders rarely seek us out, voluntarily, that is.”

He could guess why. Still. “Guess I’m lucky then.”

“Must be it.” She laughed, light-hearted, sparkling, like any young woman might, except for a hint of ice. The captives huddled together, exchanging terrified glances. A woman sobbed. Mago knew he was playing with fire, but there was no turning back now. Any wrong move or show of weakness and they’d end up with the other slaves…

DAZ3D Iray Render, 2K Iterations. Minor PS post work.

Note. Rakan/Skythe should not have 'Aurora eyes' - but it looked so nice maybe I'll change it, but most people won't notice the inconsistency anyway. If you do, just ignore it - they're incorrect, yes.
