Haidatir's original form:
Haidatir and Kian became the second an third mitutus, it is thought that their turning played a major role in the Anunnaki's defeat by the Kabbidimmyr. After their turnings and their Pillage of Eden, they disappeared, and have been rarely heard from since. It is known that Haidatir resides in the mountains in the far north, and Kian in the far south. Since then the Anu has forbade any travel into those mountain ranges. They seem content to stay there, and the Anu wishes to keep them there, so all are careful not to upset the tenuous balance maintained. For if both or even either were provoked, it could be the end of the Anunnaki.
-------------------------------
Many years ago, a man known as Ursus the Pius revolutionized the military among the Anunnaki. He was a celebrated Primarch, beloved by all, and implemented various ideas and strategies we still use to this day. His timing could not have been better, he rose to prominence just as the Kabbidimmyr and Sunura became a dire threat; and his solutions were invaluable in our people's survival. He was not only a great military leader, but also a good man, known by all to be kind, generous, and civil with everyone, even people who did not deserve it. Indeed, people like him come once in a lifetime.
Despite his universal popularity, Primarch Ursus never had a mate, nor had he children, nor did he ever personally take on or train many students; in fact, he only ever trained two: Haidatir "the Lion" and Kian "the Harpy".
These two would grow to surpass their master in military might and prowess. Their physical strength rivaled even many Kabbidimmyr. They joined and rose through the ranks of the military as our people were besieged by Sunura and Kabbidimmyr alike. It was their might and perhaps their might alone that kept those demons at bay. However, while their master was beloved by all, they were very different.
I don't wish to speak ill of my master [Archon Haidatir] but his and Archon Kian's personalities were... well as legendary as their deeds and their master.
Their past before they were trained and raised by Primarch Ursus is not known, not even to me, and I served the Archon for nearly all my life. There are many rumors about who they were and whence they came but it is all conjecture. I do not know how he came to know them. I do know that Master Haidatir did not know Master Kian, nor she him, before being taken in by Primarch Ursus as children.
Regardless as to how, when, or even why he took them in, he did. And great proteges they were, at least in terms of martial skill. They, however, did not match their master's legendarily kind and generous personality. Even though they were both trained and raised together, Masters Haidatir and Kian did NOT get along, at all. It was common for those around them to hear them constantly bicker and hurl abuses (and weapons) at one another. None know precisely why the two hate each other so much, indeed the more one digs into it the more confusing it becomes. The two were very similar in tactics, belief, fighting styles, bending styles, choice of weapon (thrusting swords), how they command their armies, even their own personalities were very similar. The two even have similar taste in music, art, and food (this I know since while I served Archon Haidatir, my twin, Isaac [the scribe's name is Isiah], served Archon Kian). The two could not stand to be in the same room as one another, hence I and my brother often served as intermediaries and messengers for the two. Looking back on it all, it is a wonder how anything got done.
Their....unusual personalities also manifested in the nicknames they acquired as they rose through the military ranks. Master Haidatir was known as "The Lion", or, more specifically "The Biting Lion of the Northern Cairns" while Master Kian was known as "The Harpy", or, more specifically "The Tearing Harpy of the Southern Plains". Neither much cared for their nicknames, especially Master Kian, but both were well established by the time they became Majors. Interestingly, the deeds for which their names come also occurred around the same time. The two were both newly promoted Calques, each on separate (praise Heba) assignments, both dealing with particularly powerful Sunura plaguing those areas. Each led a small group in hunting the Sunura down, and after the event, the two became famous for nearly single-handedly delivering the final blow against the demon. Master Haidatir, according to his peers present:
"Viciously tore into the creature with his toothed-lance in hand, piercing its black heart. The creature fell, and as Calque Haidatir pulled his lance from the beast its heart tore out with it as blood further spurt from the body. We all winced at the smell and sight, but not he. He smirked, and, with his armor and face bloodied he took the heart from his lance, held it in his hand, turned to us, and took a massive bite out of it. Like a lion takes a greedy bite out of its kill, so did Haidatir. Ioseph, already nauseous from the site and smell of our gore-covered commander, puked. Haidatir simply laughed at their shocked faces and proclaimed our mission was done."
Master Kian had a similar story, wherein instead she, upon impaling the Sunura in the throat with her spear, proceeded to viciously stab and tear into it with her particularly sharp claws, eviscerating it. Her subordinates too became nauseated at the site of their commander being covered in entrails. Many say she too held the creature's heart in her hand and bit into it, though my brother says she said it was the liver and it more incidentally "flew" into her mouth as she tore savagely into the beast. Again, the two were so similar, yet they despised each other.
When our people were being besieged by Kabbidimmyr, both Masters Haidatir and Kian (both newly promoted Aquilas) were forced to work together under the order of both the Primarchs and the Anu, much to their and their subordinates' despair. Though the two hated one another they did work well together, and both of their armies did well in pushing the Kabbidimmyr forces into The Great Forest. After the Battle of Boreal Valley victory, the two were promoted to Archon. Now full commanders of the Northern and Southern armies, the two commanded as much respect and reverence as they did fear.
The two were never known for their kindness, but, as their power and rank grew, so too did their cruelty. Again, I don't wish to speak ill of my master. Privately, he was a good man, but I think he held many personal demons that he did not share with anyone, and I believe Master Kian was the same. It was not that they grew arrogant, truly the two were careful tacticians and strategists, hence their many victories; but they grew more severe and harsh. To hear my brother recollect, Kian may have become worse than Haidatir but the two grew more and more...
"Hungry."
I use this word because it did seem more and more to my master and his counterpart they they "craved" more and more, and snapped at anything that did not grant them this. Looking back... I should have seen the signs... we should have seen then signs... maybe then...
At the time, this attitude was good when they focused on war, conquering, and vanquishing our foes. Their powers grew with each battle, with each enemy slain. But... after the battle, at camp, when it was time to rest and regroup, they... their minds... were on other things. They still commanded well but...
They also argued more and more, and fought more and more, always verbally at first, but then we all feared when their weapons and bending hands were drawn. As time went on we all grew more and more afraid, of them, more-so, for some, than our own enemies. I recall stories of soldiers transferring or deserting (Heba help them if our Archons caught them) because they feared them so.
Then... it happened...
In terms of the war we were doing adequately, we were not loosing territory, but neither were we gaining more. We were firm in our positions but we could not seem to advance further into the forest to definitely push the Kabbidimmyr further back. At the time not many of us were afraid of the war turning, since winter was coming and fighting was beginning to slow anyway, it was good that we had firmly held-enough positions that we could safely winter there. Things were good generally. But Archon Haidatir and Kian grew more and more... anxious I suppose, angered that they could not advance further. As they wanted to keep pushing further into the forest, the higher-ups told them not to, they ordered them to firmly hold their positions and wait until spring. They... did not like this.
Oddly enough the two had similar ideas as to how to advance our troops during the winter. They each had this idea separately and were beginning to make plans to move the troops, against the Primarchs' orders. The men were not happy with the plan either, but one does not simply (or at all) go against the Archon's command. Somehow Primarch Valer heard about the two's scheme and, since Valer was known for his personal paranoia, believed the two were preparing for a coup to depose him. He also believed the two were working together, which they were not, their plans were separate but similar, and if done at the same time, would help both armies. Valer sent elite marshals to arrest them and return them to Eden to try them for treason (either against him, the crown, or the Anu I'm not sure, the man was... unhinged) but... it didn't go well.
Not at all.
Needless to say Masters Haidatir and Kian were furious, furious that someone had leaked their plans, furious that a Primarch sitting in an office comfortably in Eden would dare tell them what to do, furious that they had not been able to advance their troops, furious at the insult of weakling marshals being sent to arrest them; they the "Lion of the North" and the "Harpy of the South" expected to bend to the will of bureaucrats who hadn't seen death and war up close in years. And, of course, they were furious at one another.
Many now say that each thought the other had reported them, but I firmly and truly believe this is not so. They both later knew of each other's plans, but neither would have dared to tell Valer, especially not Valer, perhaps the other Primarchs, perhaps their master if he were still alive at that point, but I know neither of them themselves told; neither any of us close to them, who knew them well, would have told. It must have been someone else, either on purpose or by slip of the tongue. But I know it was not them.
When the Primarch's elite marshals arrived, it could not have been at a worse time. The two were arguing in the training area, as they often did, with many of us looking on, both observing the spectacle and ready to jump in if it came to they drawing their weapons and bending. Fists were exchanged but that was normal. But, as they were going for their weapons, and as we prepared to beseech them to calm down, the marshals arrived, announcing to the whole camp who they were, why they were there, and they began listing the charges laid against the Archons.
Both Masters Haidatir and Kian were... passionate individuals, they were quick to anger, and were often angry at something. But never had I seen them, as they were then, more enraged then I had when those marshals arrived. It was not just me, everyone there, my brother included, grew more afraid than we ever had been. We all tried to get the marshals back, tried to reason with them, even some men drew their weapons out of sheer fear of what their commanders would do. I'm not sure if anyone else, even my brother, thought what I had, but at that moment I feared the worse, not that they would kill the marshals, but for a moment I feared one of them would become a Sunura. A fleeting thought I had and I quickly abandoned it out of shame, but later I would be proven both right and wrong.
As we all tried to keep the marshals back, two managed to get through, and attempted to arrest Haidatir and Kian. Heba have mercy on those poor men, they were only trying to follow orders, and were perhaps influenced and brainwashed by Valer's mad ramblings. But they, they shouldn't have...
I'm not sure who did it first, or if they did it simultaneously, but... both marshals were killed. Our arguing and attempts to keep the other marshals back all ceased as we all heard a slash and a crack; and then, as we all turned, seeing those two men fall to the ground, their blood starting to seep into the thin covering of snow.
We were all stunned, the marshals more-so. But it was an insult those two could not bear... the world seemed to slow down for a moment. We all tried to keep the marshals back as they drew their weapons and charged the Archons, not as their wardens but now as their executioners. Marshals are strong, and elite private group of sorts, they serve the Primarchs and sometimes the Anu as guards and wardens. They were strong, but They were stronger.
After they fell a handful more marshals, the two split off each flying in separate directions, forcing the marshals to split up. I, and many of his men, fly after my master, and my brother after his, if not to try and quell the situation... perhaps to defend him. Everyone else ran out of the way, and chaos ensued.
Archon Haidatir stopped just outside of the camp's northern gate, and began to kill more of the marshals. I was not far behind, still unsure what to do, the marshals were not focused on me but on him. He slain many of them with ease, for he had fell scores of Kabbidimmyr and Sunura. But, somehow, one of them injured him, not severely, not even gravely, but...
That marshal... Master Haidatir gave a look I would never forget... it was even enough to make the other marshals stop and step back... then... a terrible black igdim aura surrounded him as he yelled in a terrible and changing voice
"HOW DARE YOU! I AM ARCHON HAIDATIR, THE BITING LION OF THE NORTHERN CAIRNS! I'VE FELLED THOUSANDS! I EAT THE HEARTS OF DEMONS! I AM ABOVE YOU! I AM STRONGER THAN ALL OF YOU! YOU HAVE THE GALL TO DEFY ME?! HOW DARE YOU! HOW DARE YOU!
HOW.
DARE.
YOU."
For a split second I... I saw... I saw his ahs'me, it had been bigger since the two were arguing earlier but... now... just for a moment... before he... I saw... two...
That was it... That... He... what felt like an explosion, a surge of energy, a blast that sent all of us back. I blacked out, I don't think more than a few seconds, but... once my eyes focused, and I had cleared the debris from my body... I saw... my master, my Archon, my friend, my Haidatir... he had turned.
That site, that whole day has haunted me for years, and I remember it all vividly, but that site will haunt my dreams forever. I saw a terrible creature before me. A massive, towering monster, taller than the camp. A creature, his face was similar but his body... the Lion had become one... with blood-black fur and claws, terrible sharp wings, a sharp tail dripping with poison... his ahs'me huge and now two... but... it wasn't just all that... his face... his eyes...
Those eyes...
Only rage remained, bloodlust, hunger, anger... I saw it in him but... the eyes themselves... not a Sunura's...
Whenever I think back to it, I can only think what I did then, an excerpt from a children's story that the Presi used to read to us to scar us:
"...and so they saw,
those men of old,
her wings unfold,
seen with fear and awe,
Her body contort,
they try to thwart,
but frozen in fear,
for her eyes, her eyes showed a great leer.
Eyes black as night,
they froze with fright,
black eyes broke with two golden dots
they fear it so much, they still soil their cots."
That's what I saw. Eyes just like the priest Eos when she turned. Not the eyes of Those Deprived of Light, but of her, The Demon Queen, The Dead One... no... The Dead Ones. Now there are more. His power was so great, that he became the second (or third) Mitutu.
I say 'or third' because I do not know which of them turned first. It seems, like so many other times with them, they each turned around the same time. I did not know that at first, not until later, but... at that moment... all I saw were those eyes.
My hypnotic paralysis was broken when one of the marshals sounded the war horn (the horn we sound when a Sunura or Kabbidimmyr gets too close to camp), warning the others and calling for backup. Haidatir let out a terrible roar and.... carnage... blood... iron... red... he felled both marshals and his own men, even the ones flying away... I don't know how I lived... or why.
I can't remember what happened after that. The next full memory I have is waking up in an infirmary in the Elilium of the nearest town. It was a few days later. Connor, one of Haidatir's advisors, ran up to me as soon as he heard I was alive. He survived too, but not unscathed, he lost a wing, and his arm was maimed. I remember when I saw his appendages bandaged I immediately checked my arms and legs and wings, I was intact... cuts, bruises, broken bones, a broken mind, but physically intact. He was there too, he witnessed Haidatir turn. He told me what happened:
He had said that Haidatir slaughtered all the marshals, eating many of them. The men that began to fight him were also slaughtered, those that ran away fared better. He said he was both ashamed and relieved that he was one of those who ran. He said it was about half and half, those that fought, and those that fled. He had rampaged through the camp, killing and eating many. Then he flew off into the forest "maybe to go forward with that plan of his" Connor said.
Most of us were found by our neighboring camps and by the townsfolk. They too saw, and felt, that blast of energy, others heard the screaming, others heard his terrible roar. Isaac, my brother, my twin, he... he didn't make it. I searched all over the hospital for him, not listening to anyone else until I saw someone close to him. Jean, one of Kian's scouts and Isaac's close friend, it wasn't until I found her that I accepted what everyone else had told me.
She told a similar story with Kian, always mirrored events with those two. The marshals dared to pursue her, only it seems, what set her off, instead of an injury, was someone's blood getting onto her face (once I heard that I remembered, Haidatir, was injured in the face). She yelled the blood of the unworthy should never grace her face or something like that (I will publish Jean and Connor's testimonies in this as well). She too turned, but into the terrifying harpy we had always called her. Two pairs of massive razor wings, Jean said, her hair spiked like horns, all parts of her shooting razor sharp projectiles dripping with poison. "A rain of claws" Jean said. One of those claws nearly severed Jean's arms from her body, but it was the poison that took it, they couldn't save it, she would have died if the poison kept spreading. Kian too rampaged through the camp, but they did not clash with each other, she too flew into the forest.
My injuries weren't as bad as theirs, I stayed at the Elilium until they healed. All the while ignoring the constant barrage of letters and calls from other Archons, Primarchs, Entu, even the Ansharga at one point. I ignored the outside world, until, one day, when Jean, Connor, and I were all sitting in the herb garden that we heard from another survivor from the camp. (I too will post his full testimony later on)
He said that there was an attack at Eden, not the Kyria specifically, but the city itself. Haidatir AND Kian, together, charged the city and nearly leveled it. It seems they were after a specific target, the Dome of the Sun, the military headquarters of Anumatum They charged it, tearing the Dome apart, and anyone in their way, until they came upon the Primarch's Meeting Chambers. They plucked up one man, the man that caused all this, Primarch Valer. With him in their hands they, with unfathomable speed, vanished into the mountains, leaving behind a ruined Eden.
They haven't found Primarch Valer or his body... and I don't think they ever will. They may call be a traitor for saying so but... in a way, it was justice, a perverted form to be sure, but justice in its own way. To this day, even after all the testimonies and eye-witness statements and physical evidence gathered and analyzed, I think the most outlandish thing from this whole ordeal was that those two actually worked together." [Excerpt from the personal testimony and account of Isiah Isoll, former servant and scribe to former Archon Haidatir "the Lion", written Era 22:1933]
