Description So I suddenly got in the mood to FINALLY draw these guys. I had sketched a few of them in my notebook during the school year, but not seriously. I wanted to do this last night, but I ended up starting to re-read The Shadow of the Bear instead so it got me even MORE in the mood and helped me get some of the characters better than I would have if I had not done so. Let's start with the portraits:

Rose: I love Rose! But she also kind of annoys me. I don't know why, but spending so much time from her POV in the beginning of Waking Rose just kind of got to me...she's hilarious, adventurous, spirited and the more extroverted type of person ever, the last of which may be why she got on my nerves at the end there. Her character just seems to be a bit stagnant or something. I don't know.
Anyways, I used ~FireFiriel 's picture: [link] as reference for her (and for Fish) and I am quite pleased how she turned out. Because I was initially referencing her style though, these guys ended up coming out in this weird mix of my style and the Eva style, which I think helped, considering how well the latter style is at defining facial structure. Her eyes still bug me a bit, but they'll do. I always saw her hair as wavy bordering on curly...

Blanche: Blanche certainly has much more depth as a character than Rose. She's like, practically her exact opposite, as far as personality and temperament goes, which means that in the first book, which is written almost entirely from their POVs, they balance off each other really well. It also means that girls reading the story can relate to one or the other, or both. I can do both, but I'm much more like Blanche, primarily in her introversion, suspicious and more critical nature, and natural caution.
I loved drawing her, she was probably the easiest to draw (and color, in some ways.) I had a very definite idea of how I wanted her to look. Still, it was odd to draw her with her long hair, as the first picture I ever saw of her (also by ~FireFiriel ) had her with her cut hair, so I always think of her that way, even when her hair is long! Ah well.

Bear: He struck me as somewhat bland in my first read-through, but as I'm going back through now, I can see that's not the case. He's still not, like, my favorite or anything, but he's a very easy to like character, and I'd love to know a guy like him
He was by far the toughest here to draw. I was utterly stumped as to how I wanted to make his face look. In the end, I thought of Link (in the more recent Skyward Sword previews) and Kaji from Eva. You can certainly see the Kaji influence in the end, far more than the Link influence. I think it works though. I'm not entirely sold on his hair (it's supposed to be, like, right after he cut off the dreadlocks) but oh well.

Fish: Fish is probably my favorite, in part because he's such a deep, well-written and well thought-out and incredibly realistic character. Out of these four, he reminds me the most of myself, temperament-wise. I think one of the reasons he's so likable is because we see him get in a dry spell, essentially at his worst, and then get out of it in an awesome way. Not to mention that his interactions with Rose (...and almost every character) are hilarious, and his chemistry with her is certainly more...complicated than Bear and Blanche's.
He was fairly easy to draw, due to having reference and the fact that I had already drawn Bear, and I knew they look similar, so I could use that. I think I did a reasonable job...I was definitely using Link as a reference a whole lot. He's a hero too, after all By the way, I hate drawing hats, because his head looks too flat!

Rose's singing "My Love, My Life" by ABBA. She's so dramatic.

Down a level and back over to the left: this is THEM in The Shadow of the Bear. So very much. I just HAD to put Rose's hair up like that once, even though she does look so very much like Asuka...

Alas, one-sided love (temporarily...)

I fail at drawing his dreadlocks. And tuxedos. I just fail.

This scene is just hilarious...I have no idea exactly what was going on when it happened, since it's been months since I read it, so I just went by memory. Fish looks weird without his hat...he might have been wearing it, but I wanted to take a stab at drawing him without it.

And this is when I got lazy. She's a princess, riding on a subway! Sorry nearly every sketch is of Rose/has her in it....she's just so easy to draw for some reason!

If it makes you feel better, in the movie Bear has blue eyes and Fish has green ones.

The colored pictures capture each of the characters perfectly! I knew who they were right away!

I'm having a hard time figuring out which of these pictures is my favorite. They're all so good! Probably the one about Bear's dreadlocks grossing out Blanche! They're so cute!!!
And Rose is just perfect in every picture!

My favorite??? O_o
Um...Shadow of the Bear would have to be my favorite overall. Good story, gripping suspense, and great character development.
But Black as Night is my favorite for plot cause of all the twists and how it fits the original fairytale so well.
And Waking Rose has my favorite scenes cause of the Knights on campus.

Haven't been able to read any of the other books yet.

I have to agree with you, on Shadow of the Bear being an overall favorite. I mean, I think Waking Rose was written the best, and has some of the best character development, but I don't know...like I mentioned, Rose kind of annoyed me in it, so that might have something to do with it.
I have to say, Black as Night did have great plot twists, but it was crazy hard for me to get through. For some reason, I just can't handle stories told in non-linear timeline very well. I get confused too easily. Of course, now that I'm rereading it and know what's going on, it's a lot easier, but still. I do think it has more...suspense than the other books.

Neither have I. Friends of mine have the Forty Cybertheives, but I don't want to read it before I read Midnight Dancers. But I used up my gift card money and, well, we'll probably be waiting till Christmas for it D:

Who's your favorite character, by the way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

SuperheroGeek13 In reply to Mahira-MCAquila [2011-06-17 02:02:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, waking Rose was great, but Rose is hard to base a story on.
I agree that Black as Night was hard to read, but when it all came together, it was totally worth all the headaches!

All my friends have read the others as well. I hope to get the Forty Cybertheives next. I read the first chapter online and it was so good!

My favorite character...hmm...Fish is cool, but Bear's so sweet! Rose is fun, but Blanche is more down to Earth. This is hard. I'm gonna say Fish because I had only seen him breifly in Shadow of the Bear and I still fell in love with him.

I guess so....I guess it's just her personality? Or maybe that she's so...not introspective.
Very true!

Yeah...I might end up borrowing that this summer too, since I found out the order that the other two are read in don't matter...

Seems like most girls who read the series just love Fish! Even the author has a preference for him! I wonder why? I mean, I really do, because I don't...I mean, I really like him, as a character, but I don't love him...

For me, I think Rose can be a bit of an idiot sometimes. She does things that have me screaming, "Don't do it!" every other page. I love Rose, but boy she drives me nuts!

Yay!

People love him because he's weird, but in a cute way (though he'd probably kill me for calling him cute). At least that's what it is for me.

Mahira-MCAquila In reply to SuperheroGeek13 [2011-06-18 02:27:47 +0000 UTC]

Uh huh. Sometimes she's also so...naive for a...well, she's supposed to be twenty in Waking Rose, right?
Of course, the fact that she does the things that make you scream at her can also be what's fun about her, especially when she takes some of the risks Blanche won't in the first two books (it's just refreshing in that context.)

Well...I can understand that Cute is good! And I can see the weird. He's quite the character....and he's fun. He seems to bounce off pretty much everyone he interacts with (unless they're really passive, like Blanche.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SuperheroGeek13 In reply to Mahira-MCAquila [2011-06-18 17:59:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes, she bounces off of Blanche perfectly. I guess she just seems a little over the top without her sister around.

Yeah, he's got a great personality. Now that I think of it, he didn't interact with Blanche much did he?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mahira-MCAquila In reply to SuperheroGeek13 [2011-06-18 18:52:20 +0000 UTC]

Exactly

No, he didn't really. I don't know if he's ever really had any one-on-one interaction with her...maybe he did in Waking Rose, but I'm not completely positive. I guess it would be kind of hard to write.

Alex and Midnight take place during the same summer, so it doesn't matter which order you read them in. Neither have the same characters in them, so they are really not related to each other, just Waking Rose.
