Description This is a little tribute to my own first experience with anime. Spike and Faye of Cowboy Bebop and Amon and Robin of Witch Hunter Robin were some of first characters that I ever shipped. Signs that they may eventually get together were hinted throughout the span of both series. Silly me, I was used to happy-go-lucky American cartoons, and thought they'd all end up together. Wrong.

*Spoilers*

I'm watching episode 26. Faye has her gun drawn at Spike and is basically crying for him to not leave. Spike turns to her with a serious look, leans in really close to her face, looks in her eyes and... talks. Then he leaves. Dies. End of show.

Amon helps Robin escape from the STN-J, which is under attack. He gets her down in the secret, underground passage way. As she turns around, he leans in really close to her face looks her in the eyes and... talks. He even took it a step further and slid a note behind her ear. Gets shot. Comes back. We never know what happened to them romantically.

Anime LOVES to play up this little tactic with fan faves, causing theories, AMVs, fanart and fanfiction. That's all we ever end up getting. Poor little shippers, like me, are forced to live out their coupling dreams through fanmade tributes, thanks to little teasers like these. Damn you Japanese Animators and your oh-so-smart way of getting people to talk about your show!!

Drop a comment or anything if you agree. lol.

You people might forget that Robin is only 15...
All of you would have liked Amon to be a pedophile???
I think it's great they didn't cross that boundary, so many anime/movie does; you don't even seem to realize it.

Watanabe said in an interview that he and the others who created Cowboy Bebop, have never said that Spike died and that he left the ending open for the fans to decide....So in my head, he survived went back to the bebop and had mop green and purple hair children with Faye

I love and hate when this happens, especially when they're last episodes and we never know what happens. But I swear, if they EVER do this on long time shows like Pokemon just to tease shippers, I won't be too happy

P.S. I don't think Spike died, i think he just passed out or something. He lives through everything, remember? And there was nothing that ever said that he actually died...

I like your state of mind. lol.
He lived through getting shot, stabbed, shot, stabbed and thrown out of a window onto solid concrete, shot and thrown out of a monorail from 50+ feet up into water, royally owned by Pierrot Le Fou and blown up, yet he gets shot in the arm and gashed by a sword and dies?

If he was supposed to have died, maybe his death was supposed to be more symbolic than logical. lol.

Thanks a bunch for the comments and the fave !!

Is true is true, he didn't die, even though that stupid "star dissapearance" thing Watanabe pulled was just cruel. He jsut didn't continue because everyone already assumed Spike was dead, so bringing him back would habe had some...negative effects on the impact of the show as a whole.

I ranted, I'm sorry, I'm through

A star fell, true But how do we know that the star didn't belong to Vicious? In some ways, Spike and Vicious are cut from the same cloth as one another, even though Vicious is noticably more crazy and jealous than Spike.

I like to think he lived and went on to lead a long life before dying somewhere, quiet and happy.

I think the guy who was telling the story about the stars to his grandkid was explaining it some way that was more linked to Spike than Vicious- I'm not totally sure at this point- i don't remember exactly what he said so yeah, im not saying your wrong, you tottaly might be right.

The-Console-Cowboy In reply to Fenrira [2010-11-16 04:31:25 +0000 UTC]

In Jupiter Jazz, he said the star falling was the tear of a warrior who had just finished his business on his planet (referring to Gren).

He said that Spike's star was to fall soon, but c'mon man, think about it. As much crap as that guy has seen in a fight to live, only to die from a slice to the stomach? Either the director sold out or he didn't die, because that didn't make any sense. It's like in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull where Indie survives a nuclear by hiding in a fridge.

Hell, as far as I know, Spike is immortal.

Fenrira In reply to The-Console-Cowboy [2010-11-16 05:27:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know. But he did live so far as was explained, its just everyone thought he died, so Watanabe decided not to contunue the series because it would cheapen the deep impact that last scene made on the audience. Plus in explaining how it could be thought of as death, when he was leaving faye he went on about seeing if he was alive because he felt like he was in a dream and wanted to wake up(obvious metaphors) and plus the getting slicd in the stomach thing, the only real motivation he had in his life (you know, besides not starving) was searching for Julia and avoiding/destroying Vicious. Once those two options were otherwise incapacitated it really didn't mean too much for him to keep going on in his "dream". Ninnyway, Watanabe, the creator, never said he killed him off, just that that was what was assumed by the general audience.

i rambled again, sorry

Sorry i can't help but join in on this lol ; ; I adore this show and spike a wee bit too much. I ended up looking into all of this about a year and a half or so ago. Watanabe has actually never stated what's happened with spike. He wanted us to decide that fate for him. I can try and dig up the links if necessary but can't find them offhand. The phrase from Bull (the indian) you guys were thinking of was this one: “Do not fear death. Death is always at your side. When you show fear, it will spring at you faster than light. If you do not show fear, it will only gently look over you…”
Honestly, i had always thought he had died. Then i bumped into a few websites that did put alot of work into saying "Hey, this is why he lived". Normally a death in anime upset me but never to this degree. We were never given a direct answer just as Watanabe intended. Watanabe already knew how it would all end but left us all hanging.
Now about a year and a half ago i started looking into this whole "spike might be alive" aspect and really, i started to believe it. Then, a couple months after, Steve blum (Spike), Wendee lee (Faye), Beau Billingsea (Jet), Melissa Fahn( Ed), and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (Julia) all appeared on a live Tsunami benefit for Japan. They did a live reading of the episode Toys in the attic. They actually started discussing the whole Spike death thing and Mary piped up saying "Oh yea, i actually had the opportunity to have dinner with Watanabe and actually asked him if spike was actually dead or not. He said 'Yea, he's dead' ". I feel like i'm crushing everyone's dreams (including my own) since spike's death has always been a huge debate. Watanabe has refused to say anything for years and when i heard that i was like "yep..confirmed what i knew". Unfortunately i dont think anyone recorded this at all >< I just tried looking. Sorry for this lengthy response..figured i'd throw in my 3 cents.. as much i sorta hate to. I'm not trying to push my beliefs on anyone regarding this matter.

Long post is long. lol^^.

But, Nah, if she say's he say's he's dead, I believe it. And I know theres all kinds of facts and plausable thesis's(if thats a word) about both sides, but if the creator says so then... I guess, maybe the ambiguity of it all is a message in itself, which is what Watanabe probably wanted to give us, like 'what is life if you're living it like a dead man- and what is death then to that dead man' or some deep shiz like that. But yeah, to officially mak him dead makes sense- you're not going to see any spin offs or second series' coming out kids. That's what that means. It's unfortunate, but then, I dunno if anyone else feels this way, but I think it might kind of cheapen the story/end effect for me.

Well, i think watanabe's intention was to leave us all guessing. Period. We could make up whatever ending we wanted to and that's why, when he was asked (repeatedly) about spike being dead or not, he just would say "Maybe he is, maybe he isn't." He is the ultimate troll.
I wasn't really expecting him to give such a solid answer to mary. He usually avoids the answer. Maybe he wasn't anticipating on her saying anything to anyone or maybe he just doesnt wanna keep it secret anymore. Who knows. Watanabe wanted us to think about what we were given instead of giving us the clear cut answers we so desired. In a way, i can respect that. I think we can still be allowed to feel whatever we want in regards to if Spike lived or died in the end. I totally understand how you feel though, really, i do. Apologies if i was rude in any way, i just absolutely love talking about this. I think it's great to have show, 13 + years later that we're still talking about and one we still don't have all the answers for. There's so much more in the series that we dont completely know everything about : Spike's past and present i guess, Julia's past and present, Faye's past (good lord even she doesn't know, What happens with jet?, etc. The list is endless i'm sure. As much as i want to know those things and, as much as i'd love seeing more bebop, why ruin a good thing? I want more too but would it hurt the series in the long run? Just my thoughts though.

Yeah, no, I agree, someone coming back now, and adding to the series, to me at least, would only be detrimental to the integrity to the original, and I hope I offend no one with this, but the same kind of way the prequil movies that came later for the Star Wars series did. They were good and all, but I don't think they were nearly as good, or were nessescary to the original three. But yeah, I also think that for the audience reasons, also since he says dead and that means no more series for a series that everyone could have been happy to watch more of, when you end it, you end it in a way taht each person can make the message and the continuation their own- that way no one's dissapointed and everything is still something you love. Anyway, yeah, it's a great show, and I sometimes put myself to sleep at night thinking about the characters.
