Red is even better in the Manga. Ash wasn't bad in the first series. What the anime should have done is either replicate the Manga or did what Digimon did and change the protagonist each or every other season.

The reason was that the anime was eventually going to end after Kanto or Johto (most likely Kanto) and he becomes a Pokemon master, but apparently those watching the show really enjoyed it and wanted it to keep going, so they had no choice. Sugimori originally wanted Ash to become a Pokemon master like his game and manga counterparts; Red. Still, couldn't they have just made him go to a new region, starting with a new team? That way he still is considered a champion, only beginning with a new team. Or perhaps instead of Ash, focus the role on the next generation's hero like Ethan, Brendan or Nate.

Well I think the main problem is how Ash is currently portrayed in the anime.
He's been battling for years and he's still ten and never actually wins the league. Hell he also makes pretty rookie mistakes and is duped by Team Rocket all the time.
I used to like Ash when the anime was back in Kanto and Johto but now, he's an idiot making mistakes even amateurs would avoid. They should have had his adventure stop a while ago and probably have used another trainer from Hoenn on. =/

There's a bunch of reasons why Red is better than Ash....
Ash:
~Got all Badges, but didn't have to go through the trainers that guards the Leader, or the Puzzles. Plus had to redo some Gym Battles.
~Can't carry a bunch of Items,
~Has no $Money$ doesn't Gamble
~Couldn't Complete his Poke Dex in Kanto.
~Skipped the Elite Four and went to the Pokemon League, and lost.
~Had to deal with Team Rocket, but didn't stop them completely.
~Doesn't Have any Rare Pokemon.
~Still 10 years old??
~Had Help with Gym Leaders, or some random people he meets, that still suck against Team Rocket.

~Got all Badges, by going through all those trainers that blocked the way and the puzzles too, without a redo battle.
~Can carry a whole load of Items, including a Bike.
~Has Loads of $Cash$ and Gambles at a young age
~Completed the Kanto, maybe ?Jhoto?(IDK what he did) Poke Dex.
~Beat the Elite Four and their Champion, didn't care about the Pokemon League.
~Took Down Team Rocket for Good.
~Has Rare pokemon, Mew, Mewtwo, Moltres, Articuno, Zapdos, Unknowns, and that glitch Pokemon " ?! " hahaha LMAO.
~10 years old or 16 years old Either way he's Awesome at any AGE.
~He didn't need Help from anyone, he done everything on his own.

I loved the anime during the Kanto region that was best of the anime. Orange islands wasn't to much of a change, but i stopped sometime during Johto. I've always loved the games over the anime (of course i still play them

I grew up with the anime, not the games. So I cant say I hated it(only when he was in Sinnoh) but of course the games has a better storyline.
