Japan has many urban legends of horrid creatures which go bump in the night from a severed hand which lies in a toilet which may end your life in one of two gruesome ways depending on what toilet paper you want or the Kappa a humanoid turtle with a depression dish on its head which will drag you to the bottom of the lake, tearing you apart while feeding on your severed limbs.

But perhaps the greatest fear personified in recent times is the Kuchisake Onna a slit mouthed woman who depending on how you answer will at best leave your face resembling her own.

Like all legends, there is the truth behind it, Miki Sasaki better known as Kuchisake-Onna was one of the most terrifying legends in the streets of Japan, despite her feared status and her mutilated face she had an unknown relationship with the Yakuza leader Haruto Ashido, at first their business was strictly professional, Haruto would employ her for jobs too unethical for his gang and that was that, but over time their relationship grew closer and closer until one day she heard the words no one has ever spoken to her before:

“You’re beautiful.”

Their relationship quickly became a love affair an affair which resulted in two things, one Haruto's wife found out about these affairs and had him sever all ties with the Kuchisake-Onna and would Miki would soon give birth to their child, a child with a beautiful smile.

Miki thought she knew why he truly left her, her smile, her smile was hideous, and soon Miki would resent the world, resent those without her curse, and most of all resent her daughter Emi. Emi would often be abounded for hours to even days chained to her bed with nothing to eat yet her smile remained beautiful, Miki would lift her by the hair and swing her around like a ragdoll yet her smile remained beautiful, beatings, slashes, burns, abuse, and other horrors yet Emi’s smile still enraged Miki, it was the same kind of smile of the women Miki loathed and so she decided to make Emi just like her.

Years of abuse and hatred that boiled up since she was born soon exploded and in one quick move, she brutally severed her mother in half.

Now the new Kuchisake-Onna roams the streets of Japan seeking those which she deemed to be wicked in nature much like her mother, soon leading her to America as she senses the most wicked of all, Ed Murphy.

As a unique elemental Emi has complete dominance over her element, this being her shadow, she can use it to fight on her behalf, turn it into a weapon, harm others by attacking their shadows, or even consume the shadows of other to increase her size and strength.
