Ah yes, the 16-bit console war leaders themselves! (Yes, I know, Sega and Nintendo have been friends for almost 18 years now with the Game Boy Advance launch title release of ChuChu Rocket!, but I really need an excuse to draw Mario and Sonic together again after over four years ago when I drew them alongside Mega Man [whose remake drawing you will be seeing on Capcom’s 40th anniversary this year] and Pac-Man [who will make his solo debut in my gallery during this year’s The 25 Days of Deviant Art] for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS)

What’s interesting about this one in particular is that, in addition to basing the poses on promotional artwork for the arcade/Wii U/Nintendo 3DS game Mario and Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, I gave both characters 1930s cartoon eyes, kind of like what you’d see in a Fleischer Studios cartoon (or Cuphead, for all of you Xbox One or PC gamers reading this)! It’s thanks to a cartoon idea that I started having over a year ago (and described in my drawing of Lilac from Freedom Planet) that I’ve started getting into giving characters that kind of pupils on their eyes, which I may continue doing as time goes on (obviously not as a replacement to any other eye I’ve ever drawn, but as a neat little addition for me to put in my drawings every once in a while)!

Mario is owned by Nintendo.
Sonic the Hedgehog is owned by Sega and Sonic Team.
