Description
It is a cold dark winter in Late Pleistocene Western Europe, approx. 35,000 years ago...And here a big Megaloceros giganteus stag stands proudly against the barren trees of the snowy landscape with his mate nearby. This is my first impression on this remarkable Irish Elk in weeks and weeks..so more may come...and by the way, I colored this impressive Pleistocene beast with hints of Elk and reindeer in mind, because it is more commonly known as the "Irish Elk" outside Scientific circles. But after Megaloceros wasn't really related to modern day members of the genus Cervus, like Cervus canadensis (North American elk) or Cervus elaphus (European red deer) but to central and west Asian fallow deer instead.
