Description It is a cold dark winter in Late Pleistocene Western Europe, approx. 35,000 years ago...And here a big Megaloceros giganteus stag stands proudly against the barren trees of the snowy landscape with his mate nearby. This is my first impression on this remarkable Irish Elk in weeks and weeks..so more may come...and by the way, I colored this impressive Pleistocene beast with hints of Elk and reindeer in mind, because it is more commonly known as the "Irish Elk" outside Scientific circles. But after Megaloceros wasn't really related to modern day members of the genus Cervus, like Cervus canadensis (North American elk) or Cervus elaphus (European red deer) but to central and west Asian fallow deer instead.

How could he be surviving in a forest?

Well, deer are forest animals, so they depend on the forest for most of their survival. But as is with the winter, he’ll be still foraging for anything under the snow like a reindeer or caribou, though. So trust an encyclopedia on animals next time to find out more.

Megaloceros was NOT a forest animal.Β  Those antlers are just too big for such dense habitat.

Well, it actually lives in areas with small patches of trees thoughΒ

Yes. Its remains were found in peat swamps

That doesn't mean it was a peat swamp when it lived.
