This is about as close to what I picture him as I can possibly find.

Nico was the coolest character in those books. I still can't quite shake the feeling that overall they were a waste of time and waste of their own potential (there was some great stuff in there that just wasn't used right if not completely wasted, I had not confidence in the author whatsoever by the end of the first,) but Nico was great. I just could've done without...pretty much all of the main characters.

I wouldn't call them a waste of time! They aren't earth-shattering, but they are perfect at the end of a long, stressful day in the real world: light-hearted, easy, enjoyable reading that doesn't require in-depth knowledge about the mythology or an index of terms, history, events, characters etc. that some fantasy volumes require. I see where you're coming from though--Nico is probably the most dynamic of the group, but I'm also a fan of Percy. Did you see the film? I've heard that people who saw the movie turned on the series completely because it was so terrible.

I guess the thing is I enjoyed them, but not enough to keep them or go back to. The teenage/high school setting and protagonists thing was kind of a turn-off to me though, combined with that I used to love "Hercules" and "Xena" and these just weren't *as* brainless fun as those. Riordan did some really awesome work with the Pan/environmental theme, though, but I wish he would have made it Percy's business too instead of just Grover's. Or made Grover anything other than annoying and Percy completely dense. I don't usually like the main characters in these magical school fantasy things either though, I thought Harry Potter was mostly an ass, too.
I didn't see the film. It looked visually cool, but I'm one of the crazy book stickler people, and as soon as I saw they made Annabeth dark-haired when she's very distinctly blonde I sensed a train wreck :-P
They were good plane reading when I got them, I just hate not knowing whether I liked something or felt gypped by it. And it's months later and I still don't know what to make of the series, lol.
