I could not believe that a Chinese telco would have bought a theater that was built as an appropriation and distortion of the Chinese culture and situated when built in a neighborhood where no Chinese people were permitted to buy homes.

perhaps they just wanted to correct the blatant irony of the whole thing....or maybe they just wanted to make some money...or just own an iconic facade

I think they failed to every read the history, so many do. They purchased it as a branding exercise which, with the current trade war and the Chinese government essentially directing no more expenditures for business expansions in the US, seems to be going bust.  The place is not being well run at the moment.  Though the Chinese tour groups seem to lap it up.
