Description This is a cyclops sloth or primate with a mouth in its stomach that originates from Brazilian mythology. I wasn't able to find exactly what this thing was. It could either be a spirit that protects the Amazon rainforest, or a person who found the key to immortality and was punished for it or both. Either way it became a cryptid later on with many people claiming to see it in the woods in the 1900s and early 2000s. About seven people claimed to have shot and killed it but some people also think that this creature is bullet proof. This creature was also allegedly able to make sounds that sounded like a human, or thunder with its mouth. Some cryptozoologists think that this creature is another variation of Bigfoot. Some people think that this is a modern sighting of the now extinct Giant Ground Sloths.

There are some explanations for these sightings. Some people think that the modern sightings are just a bear, an anteater the extinct sloth Mylodontidae. A zoologist made an entire paper which explained how the creature that people claimed to be the Mapinguari are just sightings of the now extinct sloth mylodontidae. It is possible that the mapinguari myth comes from the fact that Brazilian natives have existed along side the Giant Ground Sloth so it could be that.

This creature was featured in the show Beast Hunters and also in the book series The Menagerie.
