I remember reading that the inspiration for Nyarlathotep came from a dream that Lovecraft had after meeting Nikola Tesla.

When I was a kid, no traveling carnival was complete without a "Mr. Electro" doing a small version of Tesla's stage show, standing on a little tesla coil platform lighting fluorescent bulbs with a touch, giving off little blue lightning bolts. Quite a kick.
