Description Jedi knight Lyric has only had a short career in the New Jedi Order, but it has been a storied one. While studying at the Jedi Praxeum, Lyric reached the age where her species underwent a metamorphosis and returned to her home on the neighboring moon of Yavin VIII, accompanied by her friends Anakin Solo and Tahiri Veila. After undergoing her changing and losing the power to walk on land, Lyric had resigned herself to life among her people, only to be approached by Jedi Master Cilghal, herself a water-creature who continued the girl's training and eventually promoted her to the rank of Jedi Knight. Lyric now holds the distinction of being the only Melodie to have spent any significant amount of time off-planet.

Species Data: Lyric is a Melodie, the sole sentient species from the moon of Yavin VIII, one of three inhabitable moons orbiting the gas giant Yavin Prime. Yavin VIII is a cold world of mountains and tundra that has a purple appearance from space. Of all the moon's surface, the Melodie, due to their amphibious nature, can only live in the equatorial zone of the purple mountains, which has the most liquid water. Melodies hatch from eggs laid by their females and emerge as small humanoid lifeforms that are tended to by their tribe's older children. While it seems cruel that the adult Melodie take little active participation in the rearing of their offspring, it is actually the fault of their biology. While resembling humanoids, Melodie are actually amphibians and unlike most, when going through metamorphosis, change from land creatures into water creatures. At the age of twenty standard years, while still looking much younger than a similarly aged humanoid, Melodies undergo a process called "The Change". During this process, which can take weeks, Melodies are taken to shallow coves filled with algae which super-oxygenates the water to allow them to breath while undergoing the process. During the actual physical change, the Melodies' legs fuse together into a muscular tail, and they develop visible gills on their necks to breathe underwater. During this time, the changing Melodies are completely helpless to the various predator species of the moon, all of which will take their chance to attack the coves where the Change ceremony takes place and can only be protected by their tribe's children until the Change is complete and they can be carried to the subterranean cavern lakes where their tribes live. The return of the new adults is always a time of celebration in a Melodie tribe, for it means their children are finally safe.
