Wow - awesome for just 30 minutes!
I'm in total awe - much like I am at his career; from Jedi to comic book movie villain... hardly the logical leap of faith..

Type casting can be a gripe. He will always be Luke Skywalker to the world. You really have to be an impressive actor to break from it and as much as Mark Hamill is a hero of mine and as great as he is at voice acting, he's not exactly Harrison Ford grade. The cool thing is, he says he's content with being Luke Skywalker because that's pretty darn cool in itself. And he's right. He walks into a comic convention and he's The Pope.

Yeah he definately didn't get a bad typecast. Although I think Carrie Fisher sort of managed to escape it to an extent too; going from Star Wars she went off and made a name for herself in more cult tings such as Drop Dead Fred, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Family Guy.

But typecasting is probably one of the main things to kill an acting career, and is a damn shame for most involved.

Carrie had it rough too but she went off to become a pretty acclaimed writer. I think she wrote "Postcards from the Edge" if I remember correctly. She also had some decent roles in Blues Brothers and The Burbs.

I just think you have to be a very strong actor to break the whole type casting thing.

Yes i did love her in he Blues and Burbs. didn't know she was a writer though! Is the book any good? I may have to check it out (I'm a huge Carrie nut)

And yeah, but it still manages to take years - even James Earl Jones never broke free of Darth Vader.. poor fella got typecast TWICE (Vader and Mufasa of LIon King fame) and you get BOTH images when you see him in things such as Conan..

Yeah but James Earl Jones had a pretty decent career before Star Wars. He wasn't as much of an unknown as Carrie and Mark were. James Earl Jones is also a much better actor. But in the end, many actors go through their entire careers without ever being recognized by the public for their craft. Some never make it at all. There are worst things an actor can deal with than being forever beloved by millions of fans around the world for playing a hero in the most popular movie ever made. They have nothing to be ashamed of.

Oh I know, but I still think it has seriously affected his career SINCE Star Wars; his only big acting gigs that I can think of being a frequent guest appearance on The Simpsons, and Lion King.
Alhough in names of actors never appreciated for their craft, I am going to vote for Jason Lee - the man is in so much and yet you can rarely find someone who can really identify him (until you mention "he's the main guy on My Name Is Earl")

Oh yeah, I've been a fan of Jason Lee since I went to see Mallrats it's opening weekend in an empty theater...lol. I always refer to him as Kevin Smith's Samuel L. Jackson. Quentin Tarantino has said that no other actor reads his dialogue better than Sam and in my opinion, no one reads Smith's dialogue better than Jason Lee.

I'm glad Jason took the EARL role though. It's a great gig and he's great on there, as are everyone else on the show. It's a perfect show. But as big as a fan as I am of the guy I wouldn't really say he's an underrated actor. He's not one of the long line of young powerhouse actors out there who are incredible yet are still struggling for Lee's kind of fame. Guys like Tim Roth, Paddy Considine, Rory Cochrane, Ben Foster and Sam Rockwell. But days do come. Just in the last few years, guys like Christian Bale, Edward Norton and Heath Ledger finally got some much due respect and fame for how good they are and sadly for Ledger...was.

James Earl Jones has had a few great roles since Star Wars. A Family Thing really comes to mind. And I would bet most kids today would also know him as the old guy in The Sandlot. But he's not a headliner
kind of actor being an older African American man who's overweight. I would kind of loosely compare his career to Anthony Hopkins. Both are amazingly talented actors, some of the best of all-time yet as long as Hopkins lives, for most people, he's Hannibal Lecter. He had a moderate career before Lambs, and he's done some really great stuff since but people will forever think of him as the cannibalistic psychiatrist.

By the way...I'm glad that someone on deviantart has decided to have a discussion with me on here rather than say--nice drawing! And then vanish. Thanks for conversing. I can tell by your profile pic you're a Spaced fan. I've been wanting to do some artwork for that show. Ever since I got a bootleg copy of the series four years back it's been one of my top 10 shows of all-time. Awesome show. Simon Pegg's finally getting some due credit as well. Good to see cause he's super talented.

And now for the REST of the conversation.. (msn was playing me about and closed a conversation so i clicked send on here by accident)
I too am glad Jason took the Earl role; it is a great show with a superb cast, and has indeed got him some recognition, and certainly helped him move on from the Stink-palming days of old.
I think no matter whta dialogue it is he reads, he always brings some brilliant energy to it that few can - even in Alvin & the Chipmunks he gave it some decorum!

But yeah, there are many more actors out there who deserve their dues. (I confess I only know of two of those names you listed)
And yes I am a very big Spaced fan - the show has a beatiful combination of the surreal and cult, with a hint of mainstream that is so rare these days. And I'm a big movie geek so get most of the references. And please let me know when you finally get round to some Spaced work! I have only two - one of Tim's "The Bear" comic, and a quick rather mediocre one of Tim daisy and Colin, so could do with some inspirado.

No problems with the conversationalism; i love having my discourses on here - so thank you for returning said responses.

the Joker! , Im surprised his career never went further than some B-movies and voice acting

Well it happens. You get type cast in a role. I mean, Luke Skywalker was only one of the biggest movie hero icons of all time and let's face it, Mark Hamil is not a great actor. Harrison obviously had the goods but out of that entire leading cast everyone knew that Hamill and Fisher were not in the same league as the others. Course they were only kids at the time. But doing voice-work for Batman and Metalocalypse ain't bad at all. And as Mark once said, "I'm Luke Skywalker! What's wrong with that?" Nothing Mark. Nothing.

yeah I guess that is true, being remembered for one thing is better than nothing lol, aw wasn't it brutal when he wailed on Vader's arm while he was against that rail until it was chopped off? was the first scene that came to mind

Amusing artist's comment.

Very good work, especially for a timed exercise. Hamill is hard to draw well, and you've made him look like himself, which is more than I can say for most Star Wars comic artists.
