The ring is passed from the grandfather to the grandson, so that at least one generation could take a break from its curse - the ring grants the wearer the power to create solid objects out of magic flames, but instead it slowly saps his mind. Luthors train their willpower since childhood - it's the only protection from the ring's influence.
