Description
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the highly awaited sequel to Breath of the Wild, and is a title I’m finding plenty of fun and enjoyment, and there are also titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Sonic’s latest mainline 3D title: Sonic Frontiers with it’s 3rd and final free DLC update: “The Final Horizon”. Now I’m not sure when Nintendo will drop their next big next-gen console, but in case it does come someday, I figure as a nice little road to Nintendo’s next big console, I thought it would be a fun idea for me to share my pitch idea on what a Mario, Sonic and The Legend of Zelda crossover game would be like. But, before I kick things off, I need to cover some quick ground rules, because since Nintendo is involved, there’s obviously some limitations for this idea in mind.
===============================
*Part-1: Ground Rules + The Theme of the Game*
The ground rules go as follows:
1. This game will be Nintendo-Exclusive. This may upset some SEGA fans who don’t have Nintendo-Consoles or don’t play on any Nintendo-Consoles, but it is what it is.
2. Since all 3 franchisers (With some Zelda games style of storytelling dippers in each title) handle their stories very differently. (Mario’s): is more show-don’t-tell as it focuses more on gameplay while telling a little hearted story in each title. (Sonic’s): in some games have more serious storytelling with actual voice acting. And (Zelda’s): *outside of “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom” which has actual voice acting* (Like some of Sonic’s games) has serious or light hearted storytelling but doesn’t have full on voice acting, and it’s instead presented by subtitles style dialogue. So, in terms of how I would handle the story, I say the story telling and tone will be based on “Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope” where it has some voice acting to some characters outside of show-don’t-tell cutscenes to it’s story telling while the game still focusing on the gameplay at the same time. And…
3. Just note that this crossover may not happen, but if Nintendo and SEGA sees this and likes this idea, then who knows if it will happen or not, but I thought it would be fun to just speculate/pitch this idea anyway.
With the rules set and out of the way, let’s cover the theme of the game.
This game would be a full on open-world adventure game set on one huge island with multiple different biomes while having multiple playable characters each with their own play styles (More on their gameplays later). Anyways, with that quickly covered, here’s my pitch idea for my crossover title: “The Tales of Mario, Sonic & Zelda”.
===============================
*Part-2: The Story*
The story would be theme around mystery, discovery, adventure and world-building set on a mysterious & sacred new island (Loosely inspired by the kingdom of Soleanna from “Sonic-06” and some minor elements from Hyrule from “Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom”), like Sonic-06 the game would be split into 3 campaign: (Mario, Sonic & Link prospectively) and you would be able to switch between the 3 protagonists on the fly at any time.
Mario’s story goes as follows: “Princess Peach has been invited to the ‘Sacred Festival’ on the Sacred-Island, as Peach brings Mario and Toad along on the journey. Upon arriving as they explore around the tropical castle-town (home to bird based anthropomorphic-characters), Mario would soon find himself going onto a journey of discovery and mystery as Mario’s new mysterious companion is seeking for Mario’s help. Half through Mario’s story, Peach has gone missing as Mario sets out to find Peach, has Peach been captured again? Or has she gone for a reason?” (Mario’s story would be inspired by “Paper Mario: The Origami King” and “Sonic Unleashed” as Mario’s campaign would focus on the friendship between Mario and his new companion)
Sonic’s story goes as follows: “The Sacred-Festival is underway, but after sometime passes the tropical castle-town is soon under attack by a mighty and big anthropomorphic-wolf who names himself: “Skull-Bearer” alongside his pack of wolfs as they attempt to capture the descendent of the sacred goddess of light: ‘Zelda’, only for the blue blur himself: ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ to intervene with the capture and rescue Zelda, only for Zelda to get snagged by a mysterious tornado as she now goes missing. Sonic alongside his best friend: ‘Tails’ now sets out to stop Skull-Bearer and whoever hired them to capture Zelda.” (The story would mainly star: ‘Sonic & Tails’ and would focus on their bound and friendship, and would focus on their adventure to stop/take down the main villain of Sonic’s campaign: ‘Skull-Bearer’)
(Note: Before we continue, the Link and Zelda we’re going to be following with are completely new version of the 2 in a newly reset timeline, with Link’s design being inspired by the character-design seen in both the opening and ending cutscene of ‘Zelda: Link’s Awakening’, while Zelda’s is inspired by her design seen in “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate”)
Link’s story goes as follows: “Link is a young knight in training born in tropical castle-town and is close friends with Zelda, but after the ‘Sacred-Festival’ is under attack by a wolf pack and Zelda has gone missing (Even Princess Peach has gone missing no long after), Link sets out to find Zelda all awhile he’s on a journey by one of the 7 sacred-champions (Zelda being the 7th champion secretly) to forge the sacred sword capable of sealing the darkness: ‘The Master Sword’ and defeat the dark lord of the Sacred-Island.” (Link’s story would act as new origin story/a reboot to The Legend of Zelda franchise, with a new Link, new Zelda, new Master-Sword, new versions of the Sages and a new version of Demise/Ganondorf. Focusing on Link’s journey of self-discovery and his path from a knight in training to the hero of the Sacred-Island)
Besides that, once you complete each of their campaigns, you’ll unlock last-story where all 3 of our main protagonists coming together to take on the main antagonist of the game. (More on that later)
===============================
*Part-3: The Gameplay*
Moving on, it’s time to talk about the gameplay on how each of the characters plays, starting with Mario.
(Mario): All of his skills/abilities (Outside of Cappy) from ‘Super Mario Odyssey’ would carry over into this game just with the addition to Mario’s combat loosely inspired by his combat from ‘Super Smash Bros.’, but Mario’s main gimmick would be focus on Mario’s new companion and his new partners (Like Paper Mario 64 & Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door), Mario’s main companion (Who takes on a form of a female-angel-like-child, her design being inspired by Cosmo the Seedrian’s design, her name would be unknown not because she doesn’t remember who she is, it’s because she was living alone with no knowledge of her parents, so Mario nicknames her: “Sunflower” due to her love for flowers and for her colour + sun pattern) who would only guide Mario on his journey at first, but as you continue through Mario’s journey she learns/gains more powers as you progress, and would act as a way for Mario to glide or briefly fly around the island as she carries Mario by tightly holds both of Mario’s hand with both of her hands while using her wings to glide or fly. As for Mario’s partners, I’ll leave it to you guys, feel free to share your ideas in the comments below.
(Sonic): His gameplay would be based on “Sonic Adventure” but with “Sonic Frontiers’ open style gameplay and combat”, with Tails join alongside Sonic through the game. The main object would focus on Sonic & Tails finding the 7 Chaos Emeralds while trying to stop/defeat “Skull-Bearer”.
(Link): His gameplay would be a evolution to his 3D outings, with some minor elements from “Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order & Jedi Survivor” where the sacred sword Link wields doesn’t have any sacred power/energy at first, but as Link comes across/frees each of the 7 champions in each of the main dungeons (In any order you like, outside of the 7th one for story reasons), his sword would grow more and more powerful as it evolves into The Master Sword over time. In each main dungeon, Link would clam more iconic Zelda items/tools through out the Zelda history.
With their gameplays all covered, onto the final act!
===============================
*Part-4: Last Story*
In the finale Mario, Sonic, Link and their companions would come together to take on the dark lord once and for all…But when they confront him, it’s revealed to be Mario’s companion’s (Aka Sunflower) father-(Who takes on the form of a anthropomorphic-Demon-Dragon, known as “Demise”) (while her mother is one of Zelda’s ancestors, that being the sacred goddess of light) this whole time, as Sunflower is in shock. The Last Story act would be a full on 3-Phase Final Boss-
-(Phase-1): You’ll start with Link as he fights Demise one on one with the fully powered-up Master Sword in hand. But at the end of that phase, Demise then transforms into a giant demon dragon, while would lead into Phase-2…right after a slick bad### cutscene where both Sonic & Tails would transform into their own super-forms (Similar to the Super-Sonic Transformation scene before the true final showdown against Perfect-Dark Gaia from Sonic Unleashed) and take off to fight Demise.
-(Phase-2): You’ll then take control of both Super-Sonic & Super-Tails as you fight Demise as a giant-demon-dragon, which the controls would work similarly to Sonic Frontiers’ Super-Sonic Fights with some EPIC Crush-40 playing in the background, after this phase concludes just when Sonic & Tails thought they defeated Demise, he returns to his anthropomorphic form (But more powered-up state/form, like when Ganondorf goes into his more powered-up through the power of his sacred stone in tears of the kingdom). Which soon leads us into the 3rd and final phase of the fight.
(Phase-3): You would then take control of Mario with some assistance from Sunflower, Link and Zelda in the final fight, where Mario & Sunflower would have to hold Demise back long enough for Zelda and Link to land the final blow and seal him away for good.
After Link lands the final blow and both Zelda and even Sunflower use their powers to seal him away, but not before Demise leaves a bit of his dark source of dark-magic as it makes it’s escapes. (Hinting that a new version of Ganondorf may rise one day), peace returns to the Sacred-Island...from here there are a total of 3 endings-
-(Ending-1: The Normal Ending): You’ll unlock this ending by beating the game as normal (Mainly only beating the mandatory primary objectives) in this ending, as the dust settles after sealing Demise…Mario notices that his companion: “Sunflower” is nowhere to be found, it’s revealed that she has disappeared/also sealed away alongside Demise as well in order to keep him at bay. Mario would seem a bit sad as he questions if Sunflower sealing herself away along with Demise was really the only solution of stopping demise with Peach reassuring Mario, the game ends with everyone back where the adventure all started as the festival is underway once again. I wanted this ending to note end on both a happy & sad note, but leave you not very satisfying enough, meaning if you really like the game and want to keep going to unlock the remaining 2 endings, you can…
-(Ending-2: The Good/Better Ending): You would unlock this ending by completing every main objective in all 3 campaigns (This time now including the optional main objects) the only differences in terms of the final boss of the game, phase-3 would be split into 2-parts: 1-Playing out the same, and 2-This time having a quick quick-time-events. The only difference is that while a bit of Demise still escapes, this time Link uses the Master Sword to seal him away/anguish him for good. Meaning Sunflower this time wouldn’t have to be sealed away as well, as they head back to where the adventure all started as the festival is up and running once again, while Mario and Sunflower part ways and bid each other farewell, Sonic & Tails take off on their next adventure with Tails thinking about his future and Sonic respecting Tails’ decision. This time ending on a much happier note, and leave you satisfied…but still not satisfying enough, like there’s still more to the game to uncover/unlock…
-(Ending-3: The True Ending): You’ll only unlock this ending if you 100% the entire game, 100% the game should not be too hard but not too easy either. In this ending it plays out the same as ending-2, but the first difference is the Chaos Emeralds do not scatter far and wide after both Sonic & Tails return back to normal after their fight. And there would be a post credit scene after the credits roll where the scene mainly focuses on Link, Zelda and The Master Sword, while teasing would might come for a potential continuation of Link’s & Zelda’s story. After woulds you would unlock the ability to go Super Sonic in the open world and in a potential new-game + in some future DLC-Packs. Leaving you on a much more satisfying note.
===============================
But with that, this is my pitch idea for a Mario, Sonic and Legend of Zelda crossover game, overall what do you guys think of this pitch idea? Let me know in the comments below and I’ll catch you guys next time.
