Description After getting back from the comicon in Charlotte I sat around for a while and watched the bootleg DVDs of "The Mighty Orbots" I bought there. After finishing off the series in a couple of sittings, I felt compelled to draw something anime and 80s like. And here it is. Space Kid don't need no helmet.

is this inspired by the yuji ohno space kid album? because he did the music for mighty orbots and had an album called space kid.

No, but now I wish it was! It's definitely inspired by old cartoons just like Mighty Orbots, in fact that in particular, but I didn't realize the guy who did the music for Lupin III did the soundtrack for that show too. I should have realized. Yuji Ohno pwns me.

Thanks! I like the perspective, but I wish I hadn't put all her limbs in such a squarish position. The blue hair reminds me of old Sega CD box art.

It is indeed one of the prettiest TV shows ever drawn. Unfortunately I'm not set up for ripping anything right now. My advice is to try e-bay and look for the bootlegs. They're made from very old VHS recordings, so they're not the most crystal clear videos ever. Still, even through all that the show is obviously amazing looking.

Supercool!
Yeah, I've actually been working on an idea for some 80's cartoon styled characters. Those shows were all so awesome.

Thanks! It's tricky drawing something that has a genuine 80s look to it, at least for me because I'm always throwing in more modern looking elements as well. I think the super-blue hair helps though. Lots of primary colors and cel shading is all you really need for an animated look. Probably researching actual 80s clothing and hair fashion would be helpful too, and using lots of leg-warmers and shoulder pads.

It definitely worked!
With my thing I'm trying to evoke more of a Masters Of The Universe/Thundercats feel. It's tough cuz you have to allow yourself to use corny and ridiculous names & looks. One thing I'm trying to keep in mind is: Would this guy work as an action figure?
