You know. Somehow, I wanted to see you draw something like this. Can you draw more?

At some point I might. Glad you like it, I definitely enjoy drawing in a style like this.

It looks a little stiff to me, but otherwise it's very dramatic, especially the lighting.

Again, on an artistic level, I admire this picture. It's like this sketchy pen work that tends to pop because of the lighter color against the black background. It's amazing how much detail is shown when there's nothing but sketchy line work. I find this amazing. Excellent job!

Thanks! I really like drawings that have a white-on-black or a 50/50 split between the two. You could achieve a little more depth by throwing in a midtoned ground and using blacks and whites to express extreme values. I'm told that a 33/33/33 split of that combination is one of the nicest ways to compose a drawing.

This is beautifully realized!
Wasn't Mtv doing an animated Spawn at one point? Or HBO, or somebody...?

HBO did an animated Spawn series a looooong time ago. It was pretty good, they got one of the directors from Batman the Animated Series to work on it. Every now and then I'll hear about them wanting to make a new movie or something, but I think Spawn is by and large relegated to just his cult following now, not really a giant hit anymore.

There was always something lacking in the character, I thought-- Todd McFarlane is a brilliant draftsman, but not a brilliant writer... Do you remember The Maxx on Mtv? [link] I never did get to see the end of it, and the dvd only just recently became available; I've got it on my wishlist, because I was very much impressed...

The Maxx is very fun stuff. What Sam Keith did when he created that series was enlist the help of a dedicated writer, William Messner-Loebs, or something like that, to handle the dialogue and help develop the story better. McFarlane pretty much did everything for Spawn himself. Some of the better Spawn issues are the one-shot stories early on where he got other writers like Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and some others to create stories. Of course that led to the whole Gaiman vs. McFarlane lawsuit over the character of Angela, but that's another story.

Holy crap, and one I've never heard!
What I mostly remember about the Maxx was that they'd somehow designed the animated version to occasionally reference panels and sequential art in a way that felt totally organic and unforced, and I do remember being caught up in the story-- considering how long I've waited, I really should've snapped up that dvd the minute it became available...

I used to be big into Spawn when I was in high school. I stopped reading it somewhere around issue 50 I think so I have no idea what might be happening with the characters these days. Kinda wish I'd kept some of the issues I had. I ended up selling them all and a bunch of other old comics to a shop a long time ago.
