Description
Top = Bajo
Bottom = Kirra
for new viewers/watchers: Kirra and Bajo are my blue tongue skinks. I had Kirra first, he is a big queensland eastern (almost 2ft long), he turns 5 next month. Bajo is the second, he’s a NSW eastern (might also be crossed with queensland), he’s fairly small, only 43cm long, he is 3 years old.
Both tanks are 4ft long, 50cm wide and 40cm tall, slightly above the recommended minimum in terms of floor space for blue tongues which is 4ft long x 45cm wide.
I like to have different themes even tho they’re the same species, some people usually aim for the same layout. The only things that are the same are the substrate, heat lamps and uvb lights. Both are currently on small animal wood shavings, both have 50w basking lights and 5.0 UVB.
Bajo’s tank is designed to look like a desert. He has 2 caves on each side, one on the cool end and one under the heat lamp, there’s half a PVC pipe in the middle. He has a hammock which is attached with some plastic hooks bc suction cups won’t stick to the material. It still looks a little bare to me, I plan on getting a cholla cactus wood as an extra tunnel and some other decorations.
Kirra’s tank is designed to look like a forest or garden. It looks way more busy than Bajo’s mostly bc Kirra is skittish and doesn’t feel safe at all if it’s too open (it really annoys me how many people don’t provide plant cover especially in snakes and take the lazy route by downgrading them to a smaller tank to solve the skittish behaviour, don’t fucken do that, it’s cruel). He has 2 hides, a 2 foot log and a corner hide that I really need to upgrade bc he’s too big for it. There’s also a PVC pipe between the log and his corner hide with a big ornament driftwood thing resting on top. There’s another, smaller log n he far right mainly just serving as an extra tunnel he can interact with. He also has a hammock, a big lizard lounge one. Under the heat lamp is a fake grass mat, bc the tiles I have will not create a hot basking spot. It’s not gonna be there permanently bc I hate fake grass, its a massive pain in the ass to clean and can develop a gross bitter smell after several washes, not worth it.
I like to keep the setups visually pleasing as well as enriching for the lizards. Having a pretty tank and a happy, curious lizard exploring/investigating every little thing you put in there is the ultimate stress reliever.
