Hi ^^
I don't know what is the material you used for the dragon and the other parts (is it some sort of soap?)

but it's really really wonderful, although he is a dragon he looks so friendly.
thanks for sharing it, I'll fav it

No, not soap!

No, it is very, very thin strands of polymer clay! I extrude them and place them carefully on the piece. It takes hours but the end result is worth it. There is a tutorial of it ("Filigree Art Tutorial") in my gallery if you want to learn how it is done.

And thanks for the !

Thanks!

The cool thing with the atmospheric/distance effects on the hills, it makes it look like you are looking out a window when you glance at it

I gotta do more of these ...

Thank you!

I'm going to have to make more ... but I may star working full-time soon, and that makes it hard to do art! But I'll do the best I can ...

Thanks!!! Let's hope the judges at the Fair like it ... We are going this Wednesday, and if I can actually FIND the darn thing I'll see what they thought of it. Mostly the judges at Home&Hobby don't "get" polymer clay, though, an probably have no clue at all how it was made or how long it took, so they will probably ignore it (just like they did the Fire Dragon and Poseidon's Horse sculptures last year).

*sigh* So much of art seems to be casting pearls before swine ...

Best of luck to you! I hope they don't ignore it, it's too beautiful to be ignored!

They didn't -- I got Third Place!!! There was a LOT of stiff competition because the rules state that if you have made ANY money working with the clay -- even for teaching a single class on it -- you are considered a "professional." Which wouldn't be so bad, except that they only have ONE category for professionals, and you can enter a maximum of only two items! Amateurs get a much better deal, because they have a multitude of categories they can enter in, and they get a better chance to win SOMETHING. Almost everyone in our Guild of more than a hundred people are considered "professionals" by the Fair rules, even though there are only two members who are actually trying to make something like a living off their work. Which means that there were almost no amateur entries at all.

And then the fool who are running the Fair wonder why there are so few polymer clay entries every year ...

We are working on getting the rules changed by pointing out the stupidity of the situation. Time will tell if we make any headway ...

Those rules are pretty dumb. Good luck with getting them changed, and big congrats on winning third!! That's a great accomplishment!

And then I've GOT to make some more!

I love how it feels 3D, which I bet feels even more so seeing it in real life. All of the textures in the background feel so....right! Like I think of the little beads in the mountains as trees and so forth. And you even put the little gradation in the sky color, just lovely!

MamaLucia In reply to AnimeJGrrl [2007-05-30 03:31:35 +0000 UTC]

the "beads" in the mountains are actually very, very tiny balls of clay with a hole pressed into them with a stylus. this piece is unique in that everything you see is actually clay -- no beads added.

Swooning! This is lovely Lucia
O especially like the background, it's wonderfully detailed and very oriental

MamaLucia In reply to GoblinMorningTea [2007-05-27 04:29:33 +0000 UTC]

what I like about the background is the way that it really likes like something out-of-doors ... I had it in my lab for a while, showing it off before I brought it to the Del Mar Fair that evening, and everytime I saw it out of the corner of my eye, I'd SWEAR it was an open window ...

70 hours work ... but DUDE, the results are worth it!

wow! that is so amazing! How long did you spend on the whole thing? I really like the head and the scale colours.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MamaLucia In reply to r4v1 [2007-05-23 05:08:30 +0000 UTC]

lessee ... it takes, on average, about half an hour per square inch of the canvas. the canvas is 11X14". do the math, and it comes out to something like 77 hours. of course I didn't do it all at once!

i'm glad the scale colors turned out well, too -- i treid several times to get them to work!

It looks great! The mountains looks so lively and you sure found a great frame for this. As I have said before, I really love the scales and the gold edges around them.
