really interesting work Francis...when this style totally settles down for you...it's going to be a real knock out.
Don't take that the wrong way...it's very well done now....but I see a lot of your future work as this becomes a more natural thing.....you are really going to be slaying people with this!

Thanks Rich! I take no offense at all! And yeah you're totally right I'm still finding my way around this style, knowing where not to ink and just let the washes do the work and vice versa has been the biggest struggle right now. I feel that my process of penciling to inking is more in synch now as I know what not to pencil and where to just let the ink take it away. But right now going from inks to washes are still a bit detached. I guess I just gotta give it time and let it simmer in the pot longer. But I'm suuper excited with the process never had this much fun drawing since I first started!

thanks man! I think with regards to my style I've really allowed the inking process to take the lead. I found that when I pencil a character like batman it ultimately looks like I'm trying to do a Jim Batman, his portrayal of him is just so imbeded in my head. I think with my limitations as an inker I use techniques with the brush that my abilities allow and I think a "style" is forming out of it, which I think is better since it's not a conscious effort. Just letting it take me where it needs to take me... I know that sounds so pretentious. lol. The funny thing is as I was trying to figure out how to draw batman I found guys like Steve Rude, Darwyn Cooke, and Mazzuchelli's portrayal of them to be much more relatable to me as an inker.
That's interesting that you and Joel were talking about rounding back. Right now the one artist that rounded back and I understood more as I learn the wash process is Enrico Marini. I've always loved his work and have had his book for years. But recently I cracked one open again and I was like "holy crap!"... it's like.. liking something before. forgetting about it. then it having a whole new relevance as you become more experienced. funny how things work out that way.
Golden meets Otomo? sounds awesome! i definitely lean to a more cartoony structure I feel it serves the story better. Sometimes when something is too real, it makes me feel detatched. But also on one end when it's too cartoony i feel the same way. Anyways I think it's interesting that as long as we've been around the block we're still figuring it out, but I think that makes it exciting! its' like we thought we mapped out the land then realized we're not even a quarter of the way through it! I think it's a great and exciting feeling!

Yeah the ink in the pentel is kinda weak. I've been dippin 'em for years. But ya gotta love the tip on the baby! Needle fine & holds it's shape.

manapul In reply to KapowSchool [2009-06-18 20:54:02 +0000 UTC]
so you dip it right in the ink? hmmm.interesting. the one problem I have with loading the cartridge with the other ink, is that it's a bit thicker so it seems to dry up the brush and and splits in the end. but I just twist it on the paper and it's sharp again. gonna have to try that dipin' thing. thanks!

KapowSchool In reply to manapul [2009-06-19 00:55:08 +0000 UTC]
just make sure (which I'm sure won't be a problem with a pro like you) that if you're not gonna use it for a few days wash it thoroughly with soap & warm water, dry it out by dabbing it in a paper towel (pinching it between 2 fingers with a twisting motion to reshape the brush point to sharp) & cap it. They'll last forever. I've had the same one for about 7-8 years ( but I don't ink nearly as much as you do m'man).
Hope this helps.
Blessings bruh.

hey you use the W&N black inks ?!
that's fine, without water, and 100% pure, it's one of the best inks I've ever found, too bad, however, that this inks doesn't always slide correctly on too tight crowquill :/

manapul In reply to J-Estacado [2009-06-18 19:20:30 +0000 UTC]
no I used the W&N water color. I just use speedball for india ink but I use the Koh-i-noor one to drop ink in the pentl brush pen cartridge since its' not was thick as speedball.
