Awesome! Batman in charge!
The background and ink work is incredible as always. But I really love how you handled the lights from the helicopters and made sure the city's skyline didn't disappear.

It shows. I think youve turned yet another corner. Youve got a great handle on this style. It just seems natural to you....at least from my side of the page. Im really looking forward to seeing where you take this! Very exciting work, m'man!

manapul In reply to TimTownsend [2009-01-27 20:46:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, yeah I really feel more in tune with this style. The thing is I dont feel I really change my style, structurally it's all the same. I'm just using a different medium which is opening up new techniques for me that I felt wasn't available to me with just a pencil. The real revelation to me was and this was to my surprise that I was more comfortable with a brush then with nibs or markers. It just feels more free flowing and natural. I'm really excited at prospects of learning new techniques I feel like I just got a new toy!

TimTownsend In reply to manapul [2009-01-27 22:14:06 +0000 UTC]

If youre anything like me it usually takes someone else to point things out about me stylistically. Structurally, yes, I dont see a big change but your approach, your line, your energy, seems more energetic, less technical (not that you were overly technical), and more spontaneous. Glad to hear youre embracing the brush. Itll definitely open up a whole new world, as youre already discovering. Hope none of this is coming off as condescending. Im just expressing what Im seeing and interpreting. Whatever the case, keep doing it! Im LOVING it!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

manapul In reply to TimTownsend [2009-01-28 00:21:34 +0000 UTC]

no not condescending at all! I actually totally agree with you! You're absolutely right in that I think the stuff looks more energetic now. I always was dumbfounded how my rough layouts looked cool and energetic..but then I gotta go in and render the heck out of it with my pencils and it looks all stiff. The scary part about inking with a brush though..are long lines..how the heck do you do that!?!? I just take a deep breath and jump in! I feel like Kramer driving a car with the gas tank way bellow the E line... weeeeee!!! And thanks again so much for the the comments they are extremely encouraging and reassure me I'm heading the right way!

TimTownsend In reply to manapul [2009-01-28 18:36:41 +0000 UTC]

The most energy in a drawing tends to be contained within the fewest lines, usually the first few lines laid down to define the gesture. Everything you add to that shaves off a teeny tiny slive of that "purity". With styles like this youre able to shoot from the hip more. There less erasing and redrawing. Im also going to tak a guess and say that you probably actually do a lot of the drawing in ink, letting the lines and energy fly right from your brush. Am I right? This is a very powerful way of working and something that the old comic masters did on a regular basis. I think its something lacking in modern comics.

As for the long lines, just use your elbow as the pivot point and let it fly. Maybe take a couple of practice strokes if need be. Another little trick is to fix your eye on the point at which you intend the line to end. Your hand will go to that point. Dont watch the brush as you throw the line. Eye on the prize!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

manapul In reply to TimTownsend [2009-01-28 20:32:59 +0000 UTC]

yeah totally! I've been obsessed with Frank Espinosa's Rocketo lately I'm just awed in how much he can show with so little. It really is harder to take away lines than to add some. And yeah earlier on I was penciling semi tightly before I would ink the pages but then realized that the way I would render things with a brush and with the washes differed from how I rendered with a pencil. So now I just rough in the figure work and plan out where my blacks would be and just leave the rest with the brush. Way more fun that way!

And thanks for that tip I'll make sure to try that out! You're totally right, I totally watch the line as it comes out rather than looking at the end point, it's actually more tense that way! I"m all nervous about messing it up.. I'm totally gonna try to use that elbow thing! thanks Tim!
