Description Just finished this group of inchies. Each is 1" square (hence the name ) All color comes from the clay, the only paint used was a wash of black acrylic to enhance the textures. These took FOREVER!

I am working on a tutorial that I will post on ClayLessons.com for them. I wanted to show how subtle changes in shade and tone add depth and interest. I only used a handful of tools. They are not hard to make, they just take patience and time. Some of the little dots are smaller than a grain of salt. o_O My eyes are not what they used to be and I always have to work with a magnifying glass.

If you are interested, here is a link to my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/MandarinMoon

Inchies are tiny little works of art that can be made of all kinds of materials. The only rule is that they must measure one inch square. They can be displayed in groups or individually, can be made into magnets, used in mosaic art projects or whatever else you can imagine.

These are incredible! I find it rather hard to work with polymer clay, and those inchies are so... tiny. I'm seriously amazed!

those are so pretty!!!!!

do you bake these with the magnets or do you just glue them after they're baked?

Thanks! For these particular guys, I glued the magnets on after they were cured.

Amazing work as always..... These would be awesome to tile an entire wall with!

I don't know if anyone has ever suggested this, but I think you should totally consider making some iPhone covers...... I don't know if/how that would work.......maybe make a mold of a plastic cover and go from there? You could seriously do some great business with that!

MandarinMoon In reply to HeddaLee [2013-08-04 17:22:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Wouldn't that make an interesting wall. Verrrrry busy LOL! I recently opened a RedBubble account where I sell images of my art on iphone covers. Here is a link www.redbubble.com/people/manda…
The main reason I started it was that I have discovered that several others are selling my art on iphone covers without my permission. They seem to be making money from them so I thought I would try. I have contacted all of the sites and individuals that I have found without much success of stopping them. It is a bit frustrating. Grrrr!

these are beautiful! I was wondering what brand of clay did you use for  the next to last square on the top row , when ever i get my clay strips that thin  and have them sticking out they tend to brake  after baking. I use premo! and femo

MandarinMoon In reply to krishna76 [2013-07-29 03:44:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I use Premo as well. They are very strong and it would take considerable effort to break them. Some important things to do to make your pieces as strong as possible is; condition the clay well before using it, make sure your oven temp is correct (pre-heat the oven and use an oven thermometer), and bake for the proper amount of time. Some artists bake their pieces for more than 30 minutes. I always do 30 minutes for these small items.

Thank you  so much for taking the time to reply. I condition the clay with a pasta roller which I thought would be enough.  The problem usually acures on my larger sculptures. The places that do not need armatures can be a little thick  I just made a siting fox  and where his tail was on the base I did not need an armature. I  bake him  around 45-50 to be sure he was fully baked , I wonder if that's whats causing the thin peaces  (like the blades of grass  and tree leaves )to be so fragile because they are over baking  insure the thicker parts are fully baked. I know you are very busy   and if you don't have the time i understand  but if you do    i will put a link so you can see the differences in thickness i am talking about .  krishna76.deviantart.com/art/F…

MandarinMoon In reply to krishna76 [2013-07-29 20:53:36 +0000 UTC]

Holy smokes, that is amazing! Would you be able to bake the pieces separately and then assemble the scene when they are all cured? I don't have a lot of experience with this sort of thing but you should join a facebook group I belong to called My Clay Fantasy. There are lots of sculptors on there that may be able to help you.

I have looked all over the page for a place to send a message asking to join , but there is not one.  Any icon  I click on says this is a Closed Group  and a lock comes up. I think maybe an administrate has to invite you or something like that .

Thank you I think your work is far better than mine   I will try your idea about firing them separately  and i will defiantly look in to that grope.
