Description So one day I randomly decided to draw a whole slew of disembodied heads just for fun .

...

The hardest one was probably the little one at the bottom right.

...

Seriously, that's all I got for this one .

do you have guidelines for it first before you draw the head and shoulders? Can you show me the guideines please when you get the chance?

Actually, I don't do very much by the way of guidelines... it's mostly just guestimation based on a ton of practice . I could try doing some with guidelines ! Also I don't know if this will help or not, but this ([link] ) is how I was taught to set up a figure... though I hardly ever use it 'cuz for me specifically, it doesn't really help . Still, it's interesting to look at... and it might help you out !

Yaythanks

Also I misworded-it my friend told medaksjdslakdj I meant to say 'reference' not tracing. idon'tliketracing

Also I just finished the pic and am uploading it now, so it should pop up in my gallery soon.

You're welcome !

I agree with you on the whole "tracing" thing... usually people who trace tend to do it quite obviously anyway . I would have trouble seeing something as actually being mine if I did that . The most I'll ever do is trace something that I sketched myself .

I'll try to keep an eye out for it (I checked your gallery just now and didn't see it right off hand ). Your other stuff looks awesome... I can't wait !

Hee, the picture is the newest one in my gallery titled 'Firion'. >u<

Yeah, I only used to trace when I was like... really really young and didn't know anything and I would plop tracing paper over Digimon magazines and trace that mega cool picture of MetalGreymon or somthing. Lol.

I like it !! The coloring and line work is so crisp and clean... I need to learn how to DO THINGS with my computer ! Um, if I may point out just one thing... it kind of looks like the right shoulder should extend off the page, in my opinion.

On another note, have you ever read/watched Mushi-Shi ? The proportions of the face sort of remind me of the main character, Ginko... which is seriously a good thing (Ginko is awesome )! He even has silver hair (though it looks way different).

I never got the chance to watch Digimon when I was little . I always hear people saying great things about it, but back then I was much more enamored with Pokemon . I always feel as though I missed the boat on that ....

I'm not sure why, but I never really tried to trace stuff when I was little. Not because I thought of it as being some great evil or anything... it just never crossed my mind . I was a kind of simple-minded kid, even as little kids go !

Although, there's this dude in one of my art classes who does nothing BUT tracing ! I mean, he's a little "off" in general, so everyone is just a bit more lenient on him and I understand that, but sometimes he'll even try to pass it off as his own original stuff . Thankfully he's a bad enough liar that everyone knows it when he does that... he leaves his "reference material" lying around everywhere .

Thanks~~
Hmm... the right shoulder? I'll remember that. I'm very new to drawing humans so my anatomy generally sucks OTL

No, I never heard of Mushi-Shi. but yay silver haired lol

I only had like the first few episodes of the first Digimon season when I was young. I was introduced to Digimon by the Digivice and the PS1 games. Hardcore.

Hey, if you're new at this then you're off to a REALLY great start ! Most of my old stuff, even from just a year or two ago, makes me want to, I dunno... set fire to it or something . Still, I think I'm beginning to even out a little... I'm finding things from years' past to be less repulsive than they usually are !

Mushi-Shi is really really good... I'd recommend both the anime and the manga to anyone . The anime is just amazing in general, but it's also extremely accurate to the original chapters of the manga. Litterally, the only differences are the colors, voices, movement, and background music... all of which are just PERFECT !

...

Sorry, geek moment !

Oh man... that's another thing I never got into: video games ! And again, it wasn't due to the whole "they kill brain cells and desensitize kids to violence" thing, my parents just never saw the merit in buying them, so we never did (can't miss what you never had ). Still, I kind of like watching people play video games sometimes (especially the ones where they shoot stuff ). It's like watching a suspenseful movie, 'cept when you yell "LOOK OUT, HE'S RIGHT BEHIND YOU !!" it actually makes a difference .

Oh wow. I still can't do that

manga-kat In reply to kidliquorice [2011-03-11 00:05:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it gave me plenty of trouble for the longest time... what ended up helping me was my anatomy class . I seriously had no clue how much I didn't know about the human head (along with the rest of the body) 'til that class practically slapped me in the face with it . I didn't even mind the pig dissection as much as I thought I would... the biggest problem with that was that everyone wanted to open the windows because of the smell, (which I didn't even think was all that bad), and it was REEEEEALLY cold outside . Not fun .

Anyway, I'd suggest at least taking a look at some books on anatomy... if you have any friends taking anatomy, you could just take a minute to flip through their textbook or something . The muscle section is probably the most helpful .

Oh I'm far too lazy for that!! Srsly, Lazy me is lazy I do have a book that shows how to draw heads at different angles and so on, but I couldn't get the hang of it before. But I've been studying the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and using that I've been able to draw hands properly(ish) for the first time, so hopefully I can use that to draw crazy heads as well now. We'll see. Gimme a couple of years and I might try it out

manga-kat In reply to kidliquorice [2011-03-16 13:13:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh, laziness... I've got that . I've been particularly lazy about my messages on here (the thing claims that I have 706 feedback messages, and a wopping 1,308 messages total ). I could help my situation by deleting all of the little "You're welcome" messages... but I'm too lazy to go through and weed 'em all out . I could also try shortening up my responses... but I don't want to .

Anyway, I took anatomy primarily because physics sounded like too much work (it was one of the two ). Sad thing is, physics is the only one of the two that they had questions for on our ACT test (no one told me that ).

For some reason I've always really liked drawing hands, even back when it was really difficult for me . Come to think of it, I'm always randomly drawing difficult things for fun... this could be a form of masochism . 'Cept it is constructive.

I've only recently gotten into crazy heads specifically... before I'd just draw a position and try to make the head match up by eyeballing it, so I guess you could also go that route !

kidliquorice In reply to manga-kat [2011-03-19 16:11:50 +0000 UTC]

Haha, 706. I don't think I've even got that many messages since I joined XD
I've never liked drawing hands. I remember when I was 10 and having to draw a picture of Queen Victoria (or actually, I was told to edit it and add arms) and I just put her arms behind her back so as not to have to draw the hands
I've been like that for a long time! And recently if you look at my pics, there are a lot of mitten hands. But I've banned myself from that now. Must overcome laziness!!

Hohoho, physics. I studied that at A Level... photons and umm quarks and so on. Who can remember? It was a long time ago

manga-kat In reply to kidliquorice [2011-03-25 03:08:27 +0000 UTC]

I think my little message explosion is partly my fault... half "lazy me", half "I joined two groups, and then submitted things to the groups" .

I remember having a hard time with hands for a little while (most of middle school), but I've always liked the way that hands look, so I think I eventually learned how to draw them out of pure subbornness . Hands are just aesthetically pleasing to me... they were something that I couldn't leave alone 'til I got 'em right . Still, my favorite way to draw hands is in a fist where you're looking at the back of the hand as opposed to the front. It's definitely the easiest... though in all honesty, it is simply easier to draw the backs of hands than the fronts of hands, no matter what position you've got them in. Oh, and I also enjoy mitten hands ! They actually don't look half bad if you do 'em the right way, and if you slowly work your way up from mitten hands, it might actually be easier to transition into more detailed ones (I think that actually might've been what I did ).

I took anatomy 'cuz everyone said that physics had math in it . Math and I do not have an understanding . We are not on good terms . Now that it's all behind me, everyone keeps saying that physics is more about understanding all this vague conceptual junk, which I actually might have been good at... AND I wouldn't have had to dissect a fetal pig ! Still, I credit anatomy by increasing my drawing skills by, like, half or someting. I don't think I'd trade it, if given the choice .

Well, I'm really glad I could help . Honestly, I always have an easier time of it when they have hair . I mean, even when I'm just drawing a base sketch for a more complex position that I'm going to use for nothing more than tracing... I'll leave off every part of the head above the brow line 'cuz I don't want to draw the rest of their stupid bald heads . I just decided to be difficult that day, and now I'm pretty glad that I did !
