I think this is so popular because...it has a lot of atmosphere in it. The colors are fabulous. It evokes a sophisticated beauty that there is a hint of in Ariel in the Disney film, even though it's a kid's movie...it's very dreamy, and makes peoplefeel nostalgic for times when they were dreamy like Ariel is...
also you have illustrated a rare sad part of the Ariel movie, unlike most people who seem to illustrate the happy parts...
and this is just so beautiful! the way it's shaded, the colors, even the subtle oranges in her arm, and the "blob" hair is actually quite fantastic, I love it.
Her face, too. The expression! So sad, so serious! You have given her a noncartoonized face, and it looks very nice.
