Description I took the liberty to divide Tarzan's original novels into five story arcs, although the latter stories are only "connected" through the fact they are episodic in nature and there is noticeable lack of returning characters and locales.

Ape-Man Rising (first half of Tarzan of the Apes, Jungle Tales of Tarzan) - Tarzan's first years, from the marooning of his parents in the African jungle, his upbringing alongside the Mangani apes, to his clashes with the tribe of Mbonga, just prior to him meeting Jane as an adult.

Concrete Jungle (last half of Tarzan of the Apes, The Return of Tarzan, The Beasts of Tarzan, The Son of Tarzan) - Tarzan's adventures after he leaves the jungle to find Jane, where he becomes a special agent in the French ministry of war, meets the loyal Waziri, deals with shady characters Nikolas Rokoff and his henchman Alexis Paulvitch, claims his birthright as Lord Greystoke, marries Jane, and finally settles down in his African state with his wife and their son Jack.

City of Gold (third act of The Return of Tarzan, Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar, Tarzan and the Golden Lion, Tarzan the Invincible) - Tarzan's sporadic visits to the lost city of Opar, ruled by Queen La, to where he comes time and again to replenish his personal wealth from its stockpiled riches, no matter how many times he has to spurn the queen's romantic advances.

Search for Jane (Tarzan the Untamed, Tarzan the Terrible) - Tarzan seeks revenge against the German soldiers whom destroyed his state and later learns that Jane survived the ordeal, prompting him to track her down to the hidden valley of Pal-ul-don, which is filled with dinosaurs.

Rootless (Tarzan and the Ant Men, Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle, Tarzan and the Lost Empire, Tarzan at the Earth's Core, Tarzan Triumphant, Tarzan and the City of Gold, Tarzan and the Lion Man, Tarzan and the Leopard Men, Tarzan's Quest, Tarzan and the Forbidden City, Tarzan the Magnificent, Tarzan and the Foreign Legion, Tarzan and the Madman, Tarzan and the Castaways) - Tarzan's exploits are now episodic, with the Ape Man becoming a seemingly rootless adventurer intervening in the affairs of an endlessly changing gallery of secondary characters whose goals and entanglements would step in to form the basis of the novels' plots.
