For being in 1710, this is awesome. I didn't even know about this battel. But I don't pay much attention to this era. Let alone Denmark's stuff.

Awesome this one battle that took place in the 18th century, reminds me of what the British Did, in order to try and hold off a CSA Attack in Northern Michigan in 1872, XD

CSA? I know Dixie lives on in the hearts but CSA was defeated in 1865 and the British were involved as observers on the confederate side. You sure about that?

Alternate history dude XD YOu must have missed my previous comment, The American Civil War story that I created is called Confederate Conquest, featuring a history on what would have happened if the South had won at Gettysburg.

LOL No problem, Hey wanna see the wikia, I have a wikia on this alternate Civil War that lasted from 1861 up to 1883 XD LOL It features new weaponry and vehicles that could have existed if the war went beyond 1865 XP

amazing rendering of the fight! excellent job, though I would expect the grenadiers were equipped with bayonets... they were generally the first ones to be armed with these weapons since the 1680s at leastΒ

Thank you very much! You're right about it, by 1710, the whole Danish army was equipped with bayonets. Why can't you see the bayonets on the painting though? Because early bayonets prevented the musketeer from firing or just hindered too much the reloading process from the muzzle. Even later on in the 18th century, bayonets were not to be equipped during organised volley fire if the unit wasn't planning to charge right after.
What made difference between units of musketeers was mostly their rate of fire, not accuracy (because it was pointless to expect exceptionnal accuracy from massive volleys fired with old smoothbore muskets). Rate of fire speed was affected by the unit's discipline (the drill and their resistance to morale shocks) and from gains of time during the reloading process. These gains of time were made by drilling the movements so they became automatic and muscle memory and extremely dexterous and fast. Now put a cumbersome early bayonet (usually very long) at the mouth of your early flintlock (very long too), then you will lose seconds in the reload process and probably many more issues. That's why bayonets were only fixed when under imminent close combat threat or just before a charge after one volley or so.Β
Now back on danish uniforms in 1710: like the Russians and many other armies in the early 18th century, the bayonet scabbard was hang to the martingale of the bandoulier right up the cartridge box: that means on the right side of the soldier, not on the left like the French "ceinturon" that was adopted by most european armies later on.Β
Hope it helps!

What's in the lower left corner of the picture: Is this the gut?

Oh my... Probably the cannon ball. I see the "bloody scar" grooved in a battle row and it looks like the fighting infantry has got artillery fire from behind?

Β Splendidly evocative work, though one suspects that these Grenadiers could probably use a battalion's worth of greatcoat for when the shooting stops! (given the weather apparent at the corners of this picture). Β  Β

Thank you very much! Historically, Danish troops were given kind of greatcoats for sentry duty or winter campaign, very much the same pattern of the Swedish ones, but not sure that all troops were equiped with these at the same time. I'd have represented the Grenadiers Corps without them anyway on purpose of displaying their uniforms. But you're absolutely right about it.Β
I can give you a hint about how the events went for these Grenadiers after the Battle of Helsingborg: they retreated with the Lifeguards after having covered most of the Danish retreat but ended mostly being captured, killed by Swedish dragoons or hunted in the nearby marshes. Few reached the safety or their ranks back.

Β It was, in other words, a very bad day to be a Grenadier ... unless, of course, one happened to be a Swedish Grenadier!Β
