How I practice shading. I'm still a new learner so pardon the inaccuracies, but I still thought i'd share in case it could help anyone.
I draw the shape of the person / objective.
I add the ambient shadow (aka the soft shadow)
I add the shadow-shadow (aka the hard shadow / core shadow) + the cast shadow.
I add the light.
I rework some parts of it if i'm not satisfied / or it doesn't look accurate.
