I refuse to believe that Kya's childhood was all bad, or that her relationship with Aang was that distant. Aang was so warm and accepting of everyone, and Kya was his little girl.For this drawing I tried to age her up from the photo where she was a toddler.

I'm still not 100% sure what to make of their relationship. I feel that the relationship only felt distant for her and her brother because Aang was spending more time with Tenzin, and Aang only did that because Tenzin could never get Airbending lessons from anyone else. Plus Aang felt that someone had to help keep the Airbender culture alive, if even a little.
Probably also didn't help it's implied he died relatively young.
