Wow. This exhibits some superb shading skills. I've always had a very difficult time with charcoal, though, honestly, I've not given it enough of a chance. Do you use something like an eraser or paper towel to pick up some of the charcoal in order to create some of the highlights?

Marbletoast In reply to Soulvei [2011-01-03 01:46:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I use a kneaded eraser to pull out a lot of the lights. I put down a 'wash' of gray first, so I am working in both directions, so to speak--toward black, and back toward white. There are other tools you can use as well, like chamois cloth, but I like the eraser. White conte is a nice finishing touch, since you can never hit true white again once you have the whole paper grey. You can use the conte to pop highlights in the eyes and things.

I recommend working large with charcoal, especially if you are not familiar with it, because it is not given to being very precise (of course, many artists do beautiful delicate renderings in charcoal as well!) It's an extremely expressive, loose, and satisfying medium, once you get into the 'feel' of it, so to speak. Before then, it's pretty frustrating!

Oh yeah, a chamois cloth makes sense. It would be a lot softer than a paper towel, which I would think might leave some unwanted markings. Thank you so much for all the information. I may just give charcoal a chance again

Right now, I'm not open for commissions or requests--I just don't have any time for it. Sorry!

Elegist [2007-07-29 16:43:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh smexy. I like how despite all the movement movement but the horse looks so *calm*. My admittedly entirely inexpert opinion tell me that his eyes aren't quite even, but it doesn't really affect the piece. It looks great.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marbletoast In reply to Elegist [2007-07-30 02:01:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!! (well, the *eyes* are technically even, but he has a heavy shadow over the left one--his right--which kind of throws everything off and definately makes it look higher. If it's any comfort, it looks less whopperjawed in real life. XD)

Elegist In reply to Marbletoast [2007-07-30 22:33:00 +0000 UTC]
