What I wonder is if names are permanent, or perhaps after they gain their cutie mark, if they are allowed to change their name to fit, since most of the names match the cutie mark.

i'd bet she could be a famous bowling player. now my pony OC would be the one to have a hard time getting hired. My brother's?
His takes the gold medal for hardest to be hired.

Yeah. I've always thought of the whole Cutie Mark thing to be kind of demeaning.
I mean, there's only ONE thing that you'll ever be able to do? Just look at the CmCs, whenever they try and do ANYTHING other than what they'll ultimately get the Cutie Marks for (Applebloom: Zapapple harvesting, Belle: singing, and Scootaloo: scooter racing) the result is total and embarassing failure!
Now, think about that! How many things are YOU good at? I, myself, can draw, I can cook, I can do needlepoint, I can drive, I can build wooden shelves from scratch, I can sing...
See? And everyone reading this, you're probably good at a lot of different things, too.

It's not "only one thing that you'll ever be able to do", it's "one thing that you are best at, something that separates you from any other pony". They can still be very good at plenty of other things, but their cutie mark says "This is what you are freakin' awesome at doing."
So we're actually unfortunate not to have anything like a cutie mark. We can be good at a lot of things, but very few people will realize what they excel at. Most people will go through their entire lives, making their way doing something they are sort of good at, never realizing what it is that they would be truly great at.
The reason the CMCs constantly fail so badly is because they always try to do things that they have no idea how to do properly, and instead of learning before doing, they jump right in and hope it works out. It has nothing to do with cutie marks, it has to do with impatience.

well actually, a lot of people overlook this, but just because on the show its worded as being a "special talent" cutie marks arent nessecarily a talent. when Cheerilee explained hers, i realized that its actually a symbol of what t of they truly enjoy, possibly do with the rest there life.

I dunno. I think the whole point of a cutie mark is that it's for an activity that you wouldn't mind doing your whole life. If you don't, then you won't get a mark for it.
Destiny manifests very strongly in Equestria.
