Description I must say how amusing I find this whole Ebola-chan thing...

Everyone has seen those movies about a zombie apocalypse or global virus, right? It always starts with these smaller occurrences on the news and, after a couple of timeskips, with increasingly numbers at the news, we have mayhem and the apocalyptic bit of it begins.

But in their efforts to look realistic, movies overlooked real life and how people are capable of being unpredictable.
What movie could possibly picture people anthropomorphizing a virus and making it a cute girl? What movie took in account the Internet wildfire of doom?

I've seen some people say "I hope your family gets Ebola for joking about something so serious, poopface!". Guess what, non-poopface! If my family gets Ebola, there will be a new focus of disease spreading through the globe. Don't you go joking about something so serious.

All in all, it's just a character, like the Grim Reaper. If the End of the World was to actually happen - as TV for some reason tries so hard to believe -, I'd prefer to go laughing. Cursed and blessed be the one who came up with this girl...

Marcotonio-desu, I'm a university student researching Ebola-chan creations for my final project. I am hoping to talk to creators like yourself about your process. I'm curious to know more about what inspired you to draw this piece.

Hello, Katelyn! I've commented a bit about such motivations at the description I put for the picture - if you have further questions, could you be more specific?
Also you may want to look into the concept of Internet Hate Machine for a broader version of the line of thought

Besides the humoristic reason, you may notice through my full gallery that I'm generally fond of the manga style and the process of anthropomorphizing things (Gijinka), which I have done since long - in this regard, Ebola-chan is just another one of these.

Interesting to know about this study, what is your field? Psychology, Media?

PS: My drawing is under Creative Commons BY-NC, so feel free to utilize it for your study.

Hi Marcotonio-desu,

Thank you for your reply!

My thesis is for a dual degree in Media Studies & Anthropology. My topic is rather broad, but I'll try to be specific. I'm interested in the culture and evolution of the "Ebola-chan" meme (and any associated conspiracy theories) as it relates, or doesn't relate, to the Ebola outbreak of last year.

I have noticed many trends and have made a few hypotheses based on reading commentary, forums, and seeing posted drawings, but I don't want to misinterpret any of the media I have been collecting—that's why I want to talk to creators like yourself. I don't want to misrepresent or misunderstand the vision.

I did read your description, but it raised more questions for me. I've been following the Ebola-chan character for awhile now, but I keep finding new things to wonder about haha. If you're willing, could I message you with some questions I have?

Also, I would love to highlight your work in my study, thank you so much for letting me know!

None, it's a gijinka (picking an object/creature/idea and turning it into a manga-styled character). The original design is not by me.
