It's hard to explain...
It's playing with words, for example:
Paula's Teddy Bear acted as a shield.
The super-strong optional party member in Mother 1/ EarthBound Zero is called Teddy.
Paula asked Ness "Would you like to know where to find another "Teddy", pointing in the direction of the Bla Bla Gang.... And then Teddy punches him.
