And this gap also elongates the moon which seems out of proportion. I do love the image for sure. . . but your eye is dead on here!

I'm sorry, but to me this is just continuing to influence the image of the physically "ideal" woman to impossible boundaries. I understand if it's for fun or what a client wants or whatever, but...that doesn't mean I can like the crazy anatomy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MarcSimonetti In reply to tygrenier [2014-03-21 09:34:41 +0000 UTC]

No need to be sorry. I'm totally ok with you not liking this picture. I don't think Vampirella is the standard for women, and this won't be featured in a magazine for young girls neither.
I don't think the anatomy is "crazy" there: It's just not photo real as the tree and the bat.
There is my cropped reference. (and I don't need any moron to tell me how I should correct my painting to fit the photo)

painting is awesome and the slightly exaggerated proprtions look fantastic, really fits the character and overall composition.

I love the anatomy and her body is to die for. Too bad people have such a hard time understanding that there really are all types of women out there, especially the people who preach about how all sizes and shapes are beautiful, except the ones you decide look unhealthy/wrong huh?Β

Thanks a lot for all the constructive comments regarding the anatomy.

The fact is that the challenge is based on a photo ref, so I had the perfect and correct anatomy as a reference while working, and I made choices.
I'm ok if you don't like those choices, or feel like "that would be better if", because art isn't a democratic process.Β

Cheers!

MMWoodcock In reply to MarcSimonetti [2014-03-18 18:05:08 +0000 UTC]

Art is democratic if you are being paid to do it, but I understand your point since this is personal piece- even if it was commissioned, no matter what someone says, it wouldn't be changed unless the client was unhappy.

Even if it is correct anatomy, I think it is more of a distraction. It doesn't emphasize the rest of the great work, so you can always do the opposite of a reference if it serves a purpose. That's my opinion though. I clicked on this painting just from the colors and lighting seen in the thumbnail preview. It was only viewing on the page that I saw the thighs.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MarcSimonetti In reply to MMWoodcock [2014-03-19 07:54:27 +0000 UTC]

If you're paid, it isn't democratic still: The client is the only one who has the last word. and the first too

There it's a personal piece made in half a day. It isn't a masterpiece, more a piece of fun. But the critique were constructive and true, which is great!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MMWoodcock In reply to MarcSimonetti [2014-03-19 14:38:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, I suppose when I think of company client, there is more than one person involved The clients have to work together to come up with something they all agree on and then turn to you to produce it. But it is true if it's a one person commissioning, it is not a democracy.

Nice composition. And I really, really like the bat.
But there seems to be something wrong with her legs/hip. It looks like her hip couldn't carry the weight of her torso. Or the legs are too thin. I don't know. Maybe it would help to move the … uhm … bottom line of her pants a bit lower?

adorkablepanda In reply to steph0804 [2014-03-18 16:59:35 +0000 UTC]

Agreed, her hips are definitely too round and there's no way she'd have such a big thigh gap. Her legs would have to be skinnier.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

MMWoodcock In reply to steph0804 [2014-03-18 15:25:24 +0000 UTC]

I agree. It doesn't go well with her hips at all He's rounded the hips too much which makes it look cartoony and less believable.

Dogeborn In reply to MMWoodcock [2014-03-18 16:40:07 +0000 UTC]

I think it's the humongous gap between her legs, even though they're closed. Give her sexy womanly curvy thies, and she'll stand just fand

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MMWoodcock In reply to Dogeborn [2014-03-18 18:01:07 +0000 UTC]

Some women have this naturally if they have a small bone structure, but I don't see how people can get such CURVES out of a really really skinny girl. You just can't... I have never seen a woman who is really really thin and small in size with boobs that big and hips that large unless they have been surgically altered :/
