Description This is not a genre of art I do very often, but I do love Art Nouveau, and I did want to make something simple tonight to play with my new-ish Copic markers. This is my first fully-Copic piece, instead of an occassional detail stroke that I've done before.

And she's furry. And she's cute. And it's Art Nouveau. What else could you possibly want? Lol ^^

Media: Pigma Micron ink, Copic markers.

Catgoyle In reply to maria-jaujou [2007-03-31 22:20:54 +0000 UTC]

I can. When all they have to say is negative, with nothing to help you get better. I've had some like that, and they are no fun whatsoever. And when they are fellow artists who aren't even at your skill level, you have to wonder if they are only being negative because you're better than they are...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

maria-jaujou In reply to Catgoyle [2007-03-31 22:54:17 +0000 UTC]

huh, that's true, i didn't think of that.

i've had a commenter like that here on DA. she hasnt been commenting on my art in a while, and i dont even know if she still watches me, but every comment of hers was on the order of "eh, this is blah... the colors are all wierd, there's not nearly enough detail, your proportions are way off, and why can't you draw more realistic-looking drapery?" while her own artistic ability was... well... let's just say that i've seen better stick figures.

and normally, i welcome all crits and comments, and the commenter's own artistic skills do not matter. i have a great amount of respect for non-artists who can see things that are "off", because their comments are exremely helpful.

but this is true only for as long as the crits are good. if your crits are big vague amorphous and mostly negative expressions of nothingness and you can't draw your way out of a paper bag, you should really be shuttin' that mouth.

Heh... yeah. I got a lot more of that sort of crap on Elfwood, sometimes from non-members since they allow anyone to comment, not just members. Had one person telling me my works were too pornographic. =MY= stuff?!? I went to their page to see what sort of work they did. Fetish drawings. Hello, Mr. Pott, please stop speaking to the copper kettle and mistaking it for yourself...

I will comment on the works of artists with more skill than I have, but if I don't have anything useful to say, I tend to keep thoughts like "it's not my cup of tea" to myself. And when I can think of why I really like something, I try to share that, too, rather than the 100th "it's so CUTE!!!" sort of comments a lot of people get/give.

So far I've not picked up any of those nags on dA who only have negative thoughts to share, and I'm content with that. But I have a ways to go before hitting even 100 watchers, much less the 500+ you've got. I'm sure at some point =someone= will feel unfulfilled unless they are telling me how crappy my work is, and how I need to find better ways to destroy paper without sharing it with "the world". (snerks)

yeah, i usually try to say something worthwhile if i'm commenting on a piece... and i usually try to comment on pieces i'm faving... among other things, it helps me figure out why i like the picture in the first place... which can help me in my own work as well.

what kind of paper did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

maria-jaujou In reply to CaptainOscillator [2007-03-31 04:32:55 +0000 UTC]

on this one? regular 70 lb sketchbook paper. why do you ask?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaptainOscillator In reply to maria-jaujou [2007-03-31 04:37:51 +0000 UTC]

the lack of bleed in your markers. when I try and use standard paper it goes everywhere.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

maria-jaujou In reply to CaptainOscillator [2007-03-31 04:47:51 +0000 UTC]

it bleeds a little if i layer a lot of color... so what i do, usually, is keep the color a hair's width inside the lines, so that there's a little bit of space between where my color ends and where the lineart is.... and so i let the bleeding take the color all the way out to the lines. and if the color doesnt bleed out to the lineart for some reason, i can always just fill it in later, or maybe apply another coat or something.

by "standard paper" you mean printer paper?

sketchbook paper.
possibly I'm using the blender too close to the lines...
