Description To me, this is what Steven Universe could've been. In the words of the dorito, "It could've been great!"

To me, this was an episode that said despite everything, the Crystal Gems could not be trusted. Despite being family, this little boy who was filled with care and love would have to learn to draw a line with his closest friends and family. Lapis Lazuli was, in my mind, the showcase of problems that Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl had caused. Steven was going to be the one who wanted to reverse those damages. It was almost blatantly written as this was the episode that said "Monsters were just corrupted gems." I know it sounds weird, but the show would've been more interesting if it had the Crystal Gems be shown as a clumsy and extremely damaging revolution instead of the "We rebelled but they got hand magic" scenario. Imagine if corruption is an effect of extreme emotional distress from the war.

As for Homeworld, it's just a name at this point. "Home". We didn't even know if it was a threat. Just an idea that the fans had to roll over in their minds. I'd hate to say a show with 160 episodes peaked at episodes 25 and 26, but there just isn't a better episode in my mind.

And lots of viewers keep thinking Lazuli is completely horrible for attacking the Crystal Gems, but I don’t blame her for doing so when these supposed “heroes” decided they were going to keep her imprisoned, most likely thinking she was “too dangerous”.
Only for that notion to bite them in the back when Steven made the hero’s choice to free her. And after reading what you wrote, it would have been interesting to see the series be more in the grey area with protagonists and antagonists with both positives and negatives.
Instead of a regime being thwarted by the power of love and talking. And Eps 25 and 26 were some of my favorites as well, along with Barn Mates (feel free to ask me why if you’re interested).

Actually, more people have a problem about how abusive she is to peridot and jasper.

Oh, how much intuition one has to use these days it seems, to understand why Lazuli was like that towards the two.

Peridot interrogated Lapis in an imperial regime, and in an imperial regime, one most likely interrogates another in a torture chamber. Peridot’s so-called “gifts” for Lazuli each were reminders of Lapis’ suffering, being Peridot’s interrogation, Lapis’ struggles against Jasper, and Lapis being trapped in an object that did function a lot like a tape recorder. And Peridot treated her interrogation on Lazuli in the Gem Warship, as something Lapis should be impressed with Peridot for and Peridot told her that the “useful information” she forced Lazuli to leak out should be taken as a compliment in that so-called “apology” letter. I even wrote in a current RP, dark alternate universe where Peridot realizes her mistakes. Really the only reason Lazuli saved Peridot was because she did not want Peridot to suffer at the hands of Homeworld like she had.

And as for Jasper, I think of how she treated Lapis in the Gem Warship the same way Spopovich treated Gohan’s love interest in the Buu Saga. Also, where as other viewers think Jasper called lapis a “monster” because she was “being mean to Jasper”, I see it as Jasper viewing Lazuli as physically dangerous and that Jasper believed she had the brute strength to handle Lazuli’s power, so that she could eventually conquer and wield Lapis like Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet in the Malachite fusion. And also Lazuli exacted her anger out on Jasper both because of how Jasper treated her and how Jasper treated Steven.

Also if anyone is going to say “Lapis tried to drown Steven and Connie and broke Greg’s leg!”, that was her water duplicates of the Crystal Gems, who I see as functioning in a similar way to the holo-Pearls or that Snow beast in Disney’s Frozen, as I find it hard to imagine Lapis remote controlling a bunch of fighters, let alone all of them at the same time.

And Lapis stealing the ocean I believe was out of frantic desperation and her stealing the barn was just an excuse for the Crewniverse to reference a pulling off the Han Solo and mention the Wizard of OZ in Reunited.

Geez, dude. Is the essay necessary? I already know this.

If you were to ask me, Lapis Lazuli's biggest issue is a lack of screen-time and defining traits beyond the plot-heavy material parts.

My favorite quote from her "Did you even wonder who I used to be?" could've been an entire other trait of her, having everything you've done in life practically be wiped off the pages of history due to the inhumane entrapment. An entire episode can go into her past while breaking down because it will never be the same for her ever again. They tried to do something like this, but it never really got fleshed out beyond just stating the predicament and moving on.

Personally, my greatest fear is being forgotten. Lapis, being forced to stay away from Homeworld, never truly knowing if anybody she knew would even remember her. It would've provided a tear-jerking response to being re-united with her home and friends and good reason for Steven to attempt peace as early as after the cluster.

Thousands of years of being trapped, only to realize that the people you care about never truly forgot about you. Seeing Lapis dispels her doubts as she finds the ones who remember who she use to be.

I don't know. Something to hope for.

Sorry about that, I just grow weary about loads of other people out there accusing Lazuli as a “sociopath” and I got carried away.

My personal greatest fear these days is oppression, which is why I don’t see Lazuli like what the haters see her as and why I feel her retaliations are resonable.

I certainly agree with the lack of screentime and I can see your idea of how her arc should have gone, especially since back when Mirror and Ocean Gen first aired, Homeworld must have sounded like a decent place and Lazuli looked like someone who others would have made friends with.

I forgot to mention I really enjoy your style in this post.

As much as i like SU(well sort of, i had to kinda relearn myself to it)
I have to agree
Ocean gem/Mirror Gem were some of my favorite episodes of all time...it made me like Lapis(though unfortunately she is now among my least favorites rip), even if she really did bad things
This and the Prison break episode with Peridots' hand ship...
But that was it
I never had other episodes i liked nearly as much...mainly because i put my expectations too high, however there was just some things i wish were done differently.

On the notes of your picture though, its hecking rad. That perspective is jaw dropping!
