Description
These are the top ten BEST main protagonists of their respective series.
NOTES: If a series has a couple of characters as the primary focus instead of solely one character, then they will be in the same box to be considered as one entry.
Also, I hold respect for anyone who doesn’t agree with me, but if there are too many ranting comments, then the comments will be disabled.
1. Dipper and Mabel Pines (Gravity Falls)
These two are twins and they practically share the role for the main protagonist of the show, so for this analysis, they’re counting as one.
Despite how they are different from each other, Dipper and Mabel function like yin and yang. Dipper is smart but socially awkward, while Mabel is bubbly but sensitive, but the fact that they are quite the duo when they face any kind of weird situation in Gravity Falls shows a lot about their relationship. Even when things threaten to break apart their bond, they choose their familial relationship in the end.
They show how siblings can truly get along and be best friends, even if you’re as different as night and day or have your fights with them.
2. Steven Universe (Steven Universe)
Throughout the series, from the main cartoon, to the movie, and finally the concluding series, Steven has always been one of the most admirable protagonists I’ve come across.
It comes down to his selfless yet complex character. He loves his friends and family very much and would do anything to help them without resorting to fighting, but he often forgets to take care of himself or neglects how he feels. And it’s what makes him complex, and in the end, he comes to accept that he needs help, understanding that his family and friends want to support him as much as he has supported them.
He reflects the ideal that when you do good things, good things happen back to you, as well as the aspect of finding self-worth and that it’s okay to ask for help when you clearly need it.
3. Emmett (The LEGO Movie)
A dorky everyman lead, but that’s what we love about Emmett. He was so good at fitting in with society, that no one ever really noticed him. Then he gets wrapped up in a crazy adventure to save the world.
Even when people doubt him or mocked him for being the dork that he is, Emmett stayed true to himself. He was loyal to his friends and Lucy, understanding what makes them special, and was willing to sacrifice himself if it meant protecting them.
It goes to show that you don’t need a special talent or super powers to be someone special. You can be yourself because that’s what makes you special.
4. Luz Noceda (The Owl House)
I may be a little late to The Owl House, starting it as season 2 was in production, but better late than never, especially with the lead protagonist of the show.
Luz is a character that the audience can sympathize with and relate to, based on how she embraces what makes her different even if she cannot make friends back home. But she is also caring and determined when it comes to helping out the new friends she makes in the Demon realm, especially involving Eda and helping her with the curse.
Another aspect that I like about her being an ideal lead character is her ethnicity and her sexuality. She is Dominican-American and is bisexual, something that I respect that was added to her character, showing the audience that there is diversity in characters that they can look up to.
5. Ellen Ripley (Alien franchise)
An ideal lead protagonist for a horror movie. Ripley is one of the most badass horror protagonists and one of the most adaptable as well.
She began her time in the franchise when she ended up being the sole survivor against the first xenomorph, and how she outwit the monster rather than trying to foolishly fight it to no avail was what saved her skin. As for the second movie, she became an utter badass with how she put up a fight with the xenomorphs, especially against the queen when it threatened Newt. Even in the third film, which I didn’t really enjoy, she is still a hardcore survivor and determined to ensure that the xenomorphs don’t end up in the corrupt hands of the company, even at the cost of her own life.
6. Anne Boonchuy (Amphibia)
A character who has grown over the course of the show, and one that I consider admirable as well.
Anne is first introduced as a human transported to Amphibia who must figure out a way home. As she spends time with the Plantars and the frogs of Wartwood, she learns to stand up to those who are acting unjust and fight back when she or her friends are threatened. She has grown so much where she puts her friends and her frog family before herself, showing how much she cares about them.
She is also a character who owes up to responsibility, doing what is right in the end and making sure that her frog family is safe when they face the various threats they’ve encountered during their journey.
7. Grizz, Panda, and Ice Bear (We Bare Bears)
The show focuses on these three specifically, so I will include them as one for this analysis.
We Bare Bears is a great show because of the topic of fitting in with society, but still being yourself. And the bear brothers reflect that in a sympathetic manner, especially given how they aren’t blood related and are very different in their personalities, but have found family in each other.
Grizz is super social but can be a bit oblivious at times, Panda is socially awkward and feels more comfortable when he’s on his cell phone or laptop, and Ice Bear is often quiet and speaks very little. Despite their differences, they learn to fit into society as themselves, and even function as a family, brothers in arms.
8. Cole, Zane, Lloyd, Jay, Kai, and Nya (Ninjago)
Each season of the show shifts to focusing on one or two of the ninja as the primary protagonist for said season, so with that said, I’m including all of them as one for this list.
Each ninja has things that make them different, and not just because of their respective elements that they can master: Kai is hotheaded but incredibly loyal, Jay is humorous but optimistic, Cole is tough but caring, Zane is intellectual but is socially awkward at times, Lloyd is the youngest but often the most determined, and Nya is the only girl but one of the strongest members.
Despite their differences, they all function as a team. They know how to cooperate and don’t force anyone to change who they are. They care about each other to the point where they consider each other as family.
9. Twilight Sparkle (My Little Pony Friendship is Magic)
Over the course of the nine seasons for the show, Twilight Sparkle has certainly grown. She was first introduced as an intellectual who refused to make any social connections, but when she made her first friendships, she realized how much her friends mattered to her and didn’t want to lose them. It was this change of heart that led her to grow. She went from being a student to Princess Celestia, to becoming the princess of friendship, then the leader of Equestria, until finally, she found herself having a student who was just like her when she was younger. And she acknowledges how much she has grown and accomplished because of her friends, refusing to take all the credit for herself because of how much she cares about them.
10. Harry Potter (Harry Potter series)
This series has always had a place in my heart because of how it motivated me to become a writer myself, and yes, one aspect that has had a powerful impact on that is the main protagonist himself.
Harry is a complex yet sympathetic character that you come to root for as you go along on his journey as the audience. He was orphaned at a young age and treated horribly by his only blood relatives who could raise him, but he remained a good kid and found his home in Hogwarts with Ron and Hermione. He grows up along with the audience, since the series takes place over the course of seven years, and the films were made over the span of ten years. And despite everything that he finds himself in, with trouble seemingly always after him, especially with Voldemort threatening the lives of those he cares about, Harry remains a good person, fighting to protect those he cares about.
Honorable mentions:
Sam (Until Dawn)
Mario (Super Mario)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic series)
KO (Ok KO! Let's Be Heroes!)
Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games series)
