from this angle, the thing on its head looks like an excavation helmet. maybe that's what the pokemon creators were going for! I never understood it before...

first I research for references of the character in the purpose of accurately drawing it. (the patterns, the look of the body parts, the nature of the character, etc.) then when I have it all set, I conceptualize on the pose and what background to put behind it.
