It's 1872 in New Orleans. A woman sits alone, drinking absinthe and letting her mind drift. Her heart has been broken by the man she loves, and as she reminisces, all the memories flood back.

Hand placement and spacing make this pose 100%. Expression is very seductive as well. Great location, too.

hellsacolyte In reply to markdaughn [2009-12-15 13:48:49 +0000 UTC]

lol mark nice comment, I never took time travel into the equation, one more mystery I guess to have to wonder about as we look at the picture.

hellsacolyte In reply to paperdolldreams [2009-12-14 23:30:33 +0000 UTC]

lol, nice detail to have picked up one, really funny. I wonder why Mark didn't have the model remove the piercing? He usually has a really tight ship with pictures.

i realize it wouldn't have been something a woman like her would have access to or really even know about.. and also that you might already know this, but piercings have been around since ancient times.. mostly done by tribal cultures but i don't see why it wouldn't be possible for a woman in 1872 in new orleans to have come across the practice somehow.

paperdolldreams In reply to black-flame [2009-12-15 04:26:25 +0000 UTC]

I could see that if she was a voodoo priestess... but she looks more like a mistress (who I highly doubt would have picked up that practice).

black-flame In reply to paperdolldreams [2009-12-15 12:28:21 +0000 UTC]

as i said, she's clearly not the type to likely have had access to the practice, but who says it's not a possibility? maybe her ex lover was a sociologist and took her on wild adventures through africa to meet interesting tribes.
it's not incredibly likely, but i think it adds a unique mysteriousness to the story.

hellsacolyte In reply to black-flame [2009-12-15 03:49:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, just doesn't really "looK' tribal or like a unknown practice, it looks like the standard affair nowadays lol oh well, still a good shot.

how do you know how far their jewellery ranged in style? history tends to surprise us.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hellsacolyte In reply to black-flame [2009-12-15 13:42:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah no doubt, I didn't even research it, not meant for it to come across that way. I just am saying that it looks modern, until proven otherwise I really don't see a reason to switch my reasoning.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

black-flame In reply to hellsacolyte [2009-12-15 22:14:49 +0000 UTC]

there's plenty good reason. why do you feel you need the story and all its elements placed clearly in front of you in order to appreciate the art? use your imagination! if it really was just something he overlooked, why not turn it into something positive and really add some depth to the feeling and the story?
that's the point of art isn't it? being open to interpretation. if you choose your interpretation to be that the photographer overlooked a detail, well go ahead but it's kind of disappointing to have that kind of view on a great set of pictures, don't you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hellsacolyte In reply to black-flame [2009-12-15 22:46:10 +0000 UTC]

I don't need the story in front on me...I have seen lots of his art, yes it's open to interpretation, but as you can tell he's light on his own jokes as well, regarding implants and the piercings. I just feel your trying to look too far into it, or are simply defending your position, either way but I don't feel I have a disappointing outlook on art at all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

black-flame In reply to hellsacolyte [2009-12-16 12:16:48 +0000 UTC]

well i'm not really super grounded to the idea of the piercing being part of the story, so i'm not trying to defend anything. i guess you could see it as looking too far into it, just as much as i could see your view as looking too little into it.
i'm sure you get my point though regardless of what you do with it!
