Very nice. I like the tone of the paint - it looks almost wooden.

This is beautiful! I just went to an exhibit of Asian art this Saturday. He really has the feel of the originals that I saw there. I love the texture you've acheived and the wonderful golden tones.

Thanks! This one was inspired by Thai Buddhas. Panels like this are quite popular here in Southeast Asia. Most of them in wood. Mine's on convas though. Glad you like

Hahaha... thanks po. I've been browsing through your gallery even before i learned to "fav" people here at DevArt. I was a member way back August 2005 but didn't really know how to go around. So, ngayun January 2006 lang ako nag-upload ng anything. hahaha...

I used a mahogany shade "dead color" to approximate wood. It's a pretty layered work, so ganun ang effect. Thanks for liking it so!

I think you're a swell illustrator, especially the watercolors.

Vangielyn In reply to markeee [2006-01-14 03:17:17 +0000 UTC]

'mahogany shade "dead color"',... now that's something new to me. May ganun bang color/tube? Or is it something you achieved out of mixing and experimenting with colors? But it's a good color! It did get that painting-on-wood effect. You really did an exceptional job on this one.

markeee In reply to Vangielyn [2006-01-14 08:10:10 +0000 UTC]

Well, i got from reading that a "dead color" is a tinted ground, meaning, your canvas is painted over entirely with a particular shade. in this case, i mixed vermilion and siena to approximate mahogany and smeared the canvas before beginning. Dead colors were popular during the renaissance, so one gets a yellowish hue. hehehehe...

Thanks for liking it! exchange of tips tayo...

*cough* exchange of tips? mas may alam ka pa kesa sa akin eh, wala yata akong maibibigay na tips, hehehe. But thanks for sharing your knowlege/technique on "dead colors". I really appreciate it. Sa'n mo nabasa yung tungkol diyan?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

markeee In reply to Vangielyn [2006-01-16 04:22:29 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... Let's see... i guess i got hand of a book sometime in highschool talking about that in portraiture. Technique naman nila in making modern portraits is to use a green "dead color" then layer the shades one by one from darkest to lightest...but that works well with caucasian skin kasi the green ground kinda makes the painting as pale as it should be. Rembrandt uses a particular shade of yellow naman.

Uy, but your "bungo" is techancally well versed. If it were done by someone else, he/she would've chosen (i imagine) to do it in monochrome shades of ochre to approximate antiquity. But you didn't and opted to use purple for the shadows the way impressionists do it. Bihira na lang yan ha.

Vangielyn In reply to markeee [2006-01-17 12:37:16 +0000 UTC]

haha! Hindi rin naman! (Pero thank you na rin, masarap basahin na "bihira" na lang mga katulad ko, hahaha!) I got the idea of using purple shadows from art books din. I dunno kung sa mga Impressionists ko siya nakuha, but I definitely got it from watercolor-masters.

Books. Pretty useful stuff, huh?

But I proved you wrong cuz i browsed yesterday and found a skull painting did exactly like i described it: shades of brown, yellow, and grey. nice naman but lacks spirit. Oh, so "bihira" lang talaga ang ginawa mong painting. hehehehe

I think so too and mostly because i did this after i did Buddha 1 (which was a bit experimental on "dead color" and industrial paints)... practice makes for better art!

Thanks
