So you use brushwork for inking?

Nibs and brushes; just depends on what's in front of me on the page.

I agree with Howard. So here's a serious question about the hair in panel two from someone obsessing over pen and brush handling - did you create the effect by brushing in a row of cursive strokes side by side (ten strokes, thin-thick-thin, wide enough to overlap) or outline a pencil design in pen and fill it in any which way, like in a coloring book?

I used brush-thin to thick to thin. using a pen would have been counter-productive and resulted in stiff looking hair.

How about the saw tooth design for the half-light or tone (or what I call bear claws). For example, on the monster's head, panels one and two. Did you feather to black with, say, the point and side of the brush to form over-lapping triangles - or outline with pen and fill in?

Brush- it's just easier and faster. If I'm doing pen work and there are small sections like that, I may try and do the small sections in pen, for expedience's sake. But I prefer to do brush-y lines with brush, nib work with nib, etc...

I'll take it you mean that you didn't outline in pen and fill in with brush. You picked up your brush and, directly, went over the pencils, forming the serrated edges (half-light/gray tone) and the black pools by feathering to (or from) black.

I have been aiming for that kind of proficiency and, while improving, still manage to make a mess. That's why I asked about outlining in pen. Some do it for things like nostrils and such in order to be neat and not change the expression of, say, a penciled feature (i.e. Gary Martin, The Art of Comic Book Inking).

Now that I know that going right in with brush is a valid working method, I can put aside any doubts and just focus on getting the knack. Thanks.
