Description A remake of my first digital painting featuring the XB-70 Valkyrie. There were 2 prototypes built of the XB-70 Valkyrie, Mach 3 bomber. It was realized that the shock cone which developed during supersonic flight could be utilized to create more lift and speed during flight. The unique shape of the Valkyrie and the cantable wing tips were designed to take advantage of this phenomenon. This is a depiction of the magnificent XB-70 Valkyrie riding the shockwave.Β Prints are available through my website, www.markkarvon.net.

Yeah, real angel of death, build for a single purpose; make a nuclear war winnable, with YF-12 derived fighters clearing the way. Thanks to advances of the orbital space flight and doctrine of mutually assured destruction, this omen of nuclear holocaust was turn obsolete.

This is just a stunning image, from an era when it seemed quite reasonable to believe that there were no limits that those engineers and designers could not overcome. The beast would still be useful today, defenses would be so vastly different if they'd built them. I've seen the one in Dayton and just... marveled.

A sexy beast for sure. She's looking good in her new (if crowded) place at the museum.

If I'm not mistaken this plane did have a legacy, named Concorde.

You are mistaken; the 2 types were both in the early design phase in 1954-56. Concorde's later first flight was due to time being spent in producing technology demonstrators rather than proceeding from drawing board to a full size airframe.

Okay I am. There was an attempt to create a Supersonic transport based off the xb-70 that was intended to be Concorde's competitor. But one of Rockwell's concept art pieces in that project did hint at the future B-1 lancer.

I've never seen that specific concept art, but that means that I've never seen it rather than that it doesn't exist. There is so much 1950s and 60s concept art that I'd be surprised if anyone's seen it all. For instance there was one piece from the 1960s (used as cover of an RAF Yearbook) of the "Concorde B2" (aka Concbomber) carrying 3 pylon hung Blue Steel stand-off bombs.

I found it in a book about the xb-70 written by Graham M Simons called "Valkyrie".
