Description The F3H Demon was originally designed around the ill-fated Westinghouse J40 engine. When the expected performance did not materialize from this engine the Allison J71 was substituted. Even with the new engine the Demon had a reputation for being somewhat underpowered. Nevertheless, the type gave good front-line service with the US Navy carrier fleet for 8 years as the first true all-weather missile interceptor. The Demon had excellent flying characteristics and was very maneuverable. LCDR Harry Milner had over 1,300 hours of flight time with the Demon. He relates the F3H would actually go supersonic in level flight at 8,000 feet altitude. The F3H could be a respectable foe once most of the fuel was burned off and the airplane got into fighting weight. In the experienced hands of LCDR Milner, he relates more than one occasion when he was able to get the drop on an F-8 Crusader. He writes, “The F-8s used to have a hammer head stall maneuver to lose interceptors. They would go straight up in burner then turn around and come straight down when they ran out. Well, we’d wait for them and catch them on the way back and follow them down the hill. That was a real education for F-8 drivers who weren’t knowledgeable about the F3H.” The F3H capabilities were also proven in 1959 when the VF-41 “Black Aces” distinguished themselves by winning the Topgun award in the air to air, all weather class at that year’s Naval Air Weapons Meet. This print depicts those airplanes of VF-41.

The F4's  older brother, yeah, all of the Navy fighters of the era had engine problems. If they weren't under powered, puffing out,or blowing up,they even got to shoot themselves out of the skies with their own missiles. In one sense,it was the good old days of Naval aviation. The Navy learned much from those trial and error times. I wonder if you're aware of the Navy's first variable geometry wing fighter Jaguar,it had engine power problems too. When I saw a picture of that plane,I thought it was too bad ,they couldn't solve it's problems.

Yes I am aware of the Jaguar. I was actually planning to do a scene featuring that aircraft but it has been placed on the back burner for now.

Incredible detail! I was glad to read your comments since I didn't know very much about the F3H and I don't recall building a model of it. I used to build model airplanes and thought I had built almost all the fighters but obviously there were some I missed.

Never heard of that plane before. It sure didn't look familiar.

You could teach a class on this stuff. How much would it cost to sign up? I'm the guy my friends depend on to know about jets, but I know I'm lacking pretty bad, lol.

Wow - just BEAUTIFUL! Navy birds were so colorful back then... and this time period of naval (nay, US military) aviation is one of the most marvelous. It's sobering to reflect and see how many aircraft designs came and went, back then, in the span it's taken for the F-35 to even reach this level of pre-deployment development. Sure, it's undeniable that computers have increased our engineering capacity, but it seems odd that so many aerospace projects seem to take so much longer, these days.

Anyway, brings a brings ole smile to my face to see a pair of Demons flying again

markkarvon In reply to RobCaswell [2013-03-15 02:49:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. I agree the aircraft of this period were very colorful and make for some interesting subjects. There were plenty of old designs that took a long time in gestation too. I think the Demon was 7 years from first being developed to entering service.

Wow, I didn't realize it was quite that long. The 50's and early 60's was such a rain of aviation ideas. It must have been a golden age to be an aviation designer/engineer. We just don't see thing like the Cutlass, Pogo, and Flapjack anymore
