Okay, it's fine if Godzilla'98 is your favorite Godzilla film. But saying it's the BEST Godzilla film just doesn't sound right, mainly because it does not feel like a Godzilla film at all.

It is a Godzilla movie. The American Godzilla and the Japanese Godzilla are cooler than the other monsters. The American Godzilla is the best. Even I’m going to bring back the sequels and make them as my own. I owned my own rights to Godzilla and I own them.

The only association G'98 has with the Godzilla franchise is the name, that's it.Β

He really should review another Godzilla film, the real ones from Toho. I'd like to know what he thinks of the original 1954 masterpiece, Gojira; The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla 2000. Hell, I'd like to know what he thinks of the upcoming Godzilla 2014 film.

That monster doesn't deserve to be called Godzilla, that's why Toho renamed him Zilla. It's not worthy of God.

You wanna know what the saddest part of it is, TriStar HAD original ideas in making an actual Godzilla film that was a lot more faithful to the Toho films, and they threw away a cinematic goldmine in favor of Emmerich's shit.
The original script:

But that would've been awesome, Why did Emmerich ruin that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Awesomeness360 In reply to IshikawaNaoki [2013-08-03 06:26:36 +0000 UTC]

3Β things:

1. The original ideas were originally going to be directed by Jan DeBont, and the team that wasΒ working on the model designs, looked 100% faithful to Toho's.
4.bp.blogspot.com/_Y5TwdoOLPTI…
Godzilla's opponent, THE GRYPHON!
1.bp.blogspot.com/-ALmdDZuD_-g…

2. TriStar panicked when they saw how expensive wasΒ DeBont, andΒ eventually gave it to Roland "AKA-the-motherfucking-douchebag-who-shall-be-remembered-as-the-guy-who-butt-raped-Godzilla's-name" Emmerich...that was a HUGE mistake. Funny, because eventually, it turned out Emmerich was more expensive than DeBont.

3. Why did Emmerich ruined something that was already perfect? Because he doesn't give a shit about Godzilla, which explains why Zilla '98 was half-assed.

*sigh* Just got back from your Top 10 movies you like that everyone else seems to hate, and I just acquired a new-found respect for you. I guess I might as well go into detail about this one. Ahem.

Godzilla 98 is not about Godzilla. It's about a monster that was mistaken for Godzilla. The scene that matters more than anything else is the scene where the fishing vessel is attacked by the monster which I will refer to as Zilla. Let's assume that, like all Godzilla continuities, the 1954 film is canon. Heck, let's be generous and assume the 1956 American remake is canon. It's been a long time since the real Godzilla attacked Japan, about 44 years, 42 if this is in the continuity of the American version of Godzilla 54. All the fishermen saw was a monster that could travel in water with spines lined down its back. They didn't have much of an opportunity to see the monster up close, and even then, it was merely an eyewitness report. So considering the monster resembled Godzilla a lot, it was natural that the Japanese mistook it for Godzilla. So why did the US make this mistake? Well, all they had to go by were Steve Martin's reports on the monster. There weren't any photographs at the time available in the US, so it was an easy mistake.

As for the movie itself, it's just a Toho monster movie set in the US. Many people seem to forget that Godzilla movies were not entirely about the monster. Mostly, they were about humans more. Godzilla 54 dealt with the Japanese people's reaction to Godzilla. Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster dealt with the attempted assassination of a Venusian (or Martian if you speak English). Destroy All Monsters dealt with the military trying to deal with the numerous monsters unleashed by an alien invasion. Terror of Mechagodzilla was a love story mixed with a revenge story. Godzilla vs Mothra 92 dealt with adventurers. So on, so forth. A monster movie rarely focuses entirely on a monster. It more often focuses on the humans' reactions to the monster. In that end, this movie is actually quite faithful.

Heck, even in the old days, monsters could be killed by conventional means. Godzilla was destroyed by a superweapon in the first movie. He was then imprisoned in ice in the second. Rodan in his first movie was dropped into a volcano. Varan was killed by mines. Destroyah was killed by the military's freeze tanks. It was only with the advent of Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster that the rule came in that only a monster may kill a monster. In addition, this monster is clearly built for speed. Godzilla tends to lumber around slowly. Zilla is more of an evasive monster. He's also created from an Iguana, while Godzilla came from a dinosaur. It makes sense that it can't withstand as much damage. Besides, how did you expect the monster to die? Tristar could only afford one monster, and most monsters in the old days tended to start on their own, like Mothra, Rodan, Manda, even Godzilla himself. If you could think of a better way to kill Godzilla in the time allotted, I'd like to hear it. Be specific.

In fact, if you're going to complain about things that don't make sense in this movie, there's a lot of material in the Japanese stuff. Jet Jaguar, Godzilla's dropkick, nuclear breath flight, numerous moments of stock footage...I could spend an entire conversation on silly moments from the Japanese movies.

Acting's all right. Don't like the woman, have no opinion on Mathew Brodderick, though he has done good work in the past (War Games, for example). Love the French guy. Dialogue is typical disaster movie. I actually liked "that's a lotta fish". It was a classic example of understatement. CG is primitive, but I haven't seen the Japanese movies do better. The scene with the Mini-Zillas wasn't that great. Too much Jurassic Park influence.

So overall, 3/5. Not the best, but a pretty faithful effort. I've seen worse from Japan, anyway (All Monsters Attack, Godzilla vs. Meagalon).

And think of it this way: This movie caused the Heisei movies to get licensed in the US, by Tristar no less, and saw a great cartoon series that was leagues above the Hanna Barbera cartoon. The monster from that one is even called Godzilla Junior by Toho!
