Description A piece inspired by a somewhat thought-provoking quote from the book Cabal by Clive Barker...

"you call us monsters... but when you dream it is of flying and of changing shape."

To me - it kind of summarises what happens in dreams quite well....

In dreams we are all beautiful beasts, magnificent monsters and beyond the confines of the flimsy veil we laughingly call reality.

In dreams we are no less real that when awake... but it could effectively be argued that we are more our 'real self' in our dreams that at any time when our eyes are open in the cold light of day.

right, now the details:

Firstly - a big thank you to Tigg-stock for creating this image used as a photo-reference for the shoulders.

Secondly (and more importantly.... as she gently explained )- a massive thank you to my partner faerysharp who allowed me to use a photo of her to play with for the face (she also took the photo in question) - I now owe her cake

created using Serif software's rather inexpensive but effective photoplus 10 and a Wacom Volito2 USB tablet...

the PC in question is almost steam powered (shop brought from PC world about 5 years ago)... but when it works, it does Okay... I guess

I have to say, this is the most single complex piece I have ever done (got to around 25+ layers at some point really amazed it didn't crash) and it was blighted by the usual issues of using an old cranky computer and weird saving procedures which meant I had to play the 'find the file' game

Despite all these issues, I am glad (or relieved)
that I managed to finish it.

AS usual, critiques, praise and so on readily accepted.

Hey - if you really like it, why not fave it so you can view it over and over again... you know you want to (who says subliminal adverts don't work).

Enjoy

***NOTE: there's been a slight edit in this submission - contrast of words and 1 extra tentacle added for balance... I am so never 100% happy with my work ***

Beautiful. Seldom do I see a piece that makes me think and wonder and...dream. We are so quick to judge anything out of the ordinary and yet, we all want to be extraordinary to some extent. We tell frightening tales of horrible monsters and yet, we would kill for some of the powers these 'monsters' have.
I love the blurring text swimming in and out. To me, it reminds me of my dreams. I can remember pieces so vividly and then the rest, it's more of a subtle feeling. Pulse racing, so frightened to go back to sleep, yet desiring to see more. I believe 'You call us monsters' effectively captures that feeling. The fear and desire of the extraordinary.
Again, well done. It's beautiful. To be honest, I don't normally like tentacles. However, you have made them a pleasure to look at.

That is the 2nd critque of this peice I have received that kind of makes not winning the competition much less of an issue it once seemed.
I am so very pleased that people 'get it' without having to ask a huge ammount of questions about motivation and purpose in the piece.
Your last scentence sums it up so accurately and clearly...

"The fear and desire of the extraordinary."

Many thanks for your support, when I have more time... I will visit your gallery and peruse it carefully and maybe leave a few words of my own.

I'm flattered!

Think it's a club I would like to join (despite what Groucho Marx said about clubs and memebership).

There's one question though - can't seem to see it in there...

Guessing it's in the Nightbreed section (Cabal for those reading in paperback).

Here you go: [link]

Yep, considering the breadth of his work, we decided to just add an independent folder if we had art that exceeded a certain number for a specific work!

cheers!

Think it's going to available as a print also, as the competition it was submitted for is now all done and dusted....

Didn't see any notifications for who won though...

to convey a thought or dream with art is one of the most difficult things an artist can attempt. as everyone's thoughts are their own and we all have our vision of what the visual representation will be. I like the artists use of blurred words coming in and out of focus, like the meaning isn't focused and the dream doesn't come to the surface but only hints at the message. like a dream the image come out of the darkness and stare at us. you call us monsters conveys that moment just before we wake up in a cold sweat not really believing what we just saw. most of us will turn on the light and hope the image goes away... the art work gives us all a chance to revisit once our heart stop beating so fast.

Wow!

Seriously - thank you for taking the time to write such an astute and thoughtful comment.

Amazingly, this is exactly the kind of sense I wanted to convey in the piece.

To me, the fact that someone who I have never met, picked up on that is for me more satisfying than winning any sort of competition (not that winning this one would be a bad thing of course )... I often feel frustrated by positive but non-descriptive comments left, as they don't convey any sort of point of view from the viewer. This being a pleasurable exception.

Again, a sincere thank-you in taking the time to write and put your thoughts into words.
