Description

(Takes place between 2015.a.t.b, two years before events of R1 and 2019 a.t.b., the alternate events of R2)

The second sequel to the Rise of Resistance series, the Peak of Resistance basically reconstructs the events before R1 and after R2.

Britannia's decision to launch its invasion of the Eurasian Continental Alliance would dramatically shape the events of the Third Great World War, as their open front against the APA is also extended with the Britannian-backed Imperial Chinese Army (Free Chinese Army in local terms) attacking the coastal cities held by the communists. Tianzi's reliance on Britannia eventually came with a hefty price: she was wedded to Odysseus eu Britannia in exchange for helping them defeat the communists. As Britannia predicted, the Chinese Communist Party denounced Tianzi (or rather, Jiang Lihua, as the communists mockingly called her) and her followers as puppets of the Britannian imperialists. However, both Britannia and the Free Chinese countered with their own propaganda, spouting anti-communist slogans that encouraged the disenfranchised sectors of Chinese society to rise up and reclaim their place.

In contrast to the Chinese theater, the war between Britannia and the Eurasian Economic Alliance was extremely horrific. Both sides slaughtered each other and neither side bothered to take prisoners. The Russian Army bore the brunt of the fighting in the east while Britannian offensives in Western Europe was delegated to the German Army, which also took heavy casualties. In addition, civilians caught behind enemy lines were routinely deported or exterminated while new Britannian Settlements were being built within the concessions of captured Russian towns and cities (those Settlements were later destroyed and rebuilt in the very same manner after the war ended). In stark contrast, captured Western European towns and cities were left alone but they liquidated Japanese ghettoes built in cities like Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels.

Another fatal mistake that Britannia committed was the surprise attack on Australasia, which they intended to destroy completely and re-colonize it with loyal settlers from across the Britannian Empire. Already dealing with the wars against the APA and ECA, as well as suppressing rebel forces in all of the conquered areas (including Area Eleven, where the insurgency is at the strongest), Prince Schneizel's fears of a Britannian defeat are not baseless at all. Charles zi Britannia, the 98th Britannian Emperor on the other hand, felt that a Britannia distracted by wars would be a good diversion for his own personal project involving those mysterious ruins.

Nizhnevartovsk was supposed to be another minor city that was to fall into Britannian hands after their invasion of ECA-held Siberia kicked off in 2013 a.t.b., and even the so-called fortress city of Krasnoyarsk fell after a three month siege that saw the majority of the Russian defenders fight to the death in order to stop the Britannians from taking it. However, the weakened Britannian forces were prey to guerrilla attacks that made the Japanese insurgency look like a minor squabble, and by the time Nizhnevartovsk was within Britannian sights, the bulk of the ECA forces (many of whom were both German and Russian, as well as some Italian and Dutch troops) fortified and boobytrapped the city.

To the surprise of the whole world, the Britannians would face their first defeat in the Battle of Nizhnevartovsk by February 14th, 2015 a.t.b. after a grueling battle that saw house to house combat. Even the battle hardened Britannian Army, with all of its knightmare frames and experienced soldiers from the counter-insurgency missions against Japanese guerrillas, wasn't prepared for what the ECA has in store for them: their first deployment of native-manufactured knightmare frames, codenamed Liveni(1). Though there were only a hundred of those machines, it was adequate enough to help stem the tide.

Between the aftermath of Britannia's defeat in Nizhnevartovsk and the rise of the Black Rebellion, the Britannians started to gradually retreat while bleeding out their ECA adversaries. A brief Britannian counter-offensive against the ECA in Kemerovo in July of 2016 a.t.b. did result in a minor victory for them, but the major thrust into Britannian occupied Krasnoyarsk would prove to be decisive in the ECA's favor. In other fronts, the Britannians are also facing major setbacks in the Netherlands and northern France as ECA bombing sorties continued to pound London, Manchester and York. In the North African theater, the Britannians are easily gaining territory at the expense of the ECA Member State Italy.

The rise of the Order of the Black Knights was for a moment, going to be like those other guerrilla units operating throughout Japan. However, their recruitment of former Provisional GLA troops and mercenaries and their growing value had posed a challenge to the JUS-JHA since they have been leading the guerrilla operations for years. An uneasy alliance between the Black Knights and the JUS-JHA eventually became fruitful as the Black Knights also started to attract anti-monarchist Britannian republicans and anti-imperialists of all stripes into the former. Within the Black Knights, the mysterious leader called Zero appointed a charismatic ex-Provisional GLA officer by the name of Kane to be his second-in-command. Kane's appointment had garnered resentment among the JUS-JHA who felt that foreigners shouldn't lead the Japanese resistance movement.

The First Battle of Tokyo in 2017 a.t.b. coincided with the massive ECA offensive into the Yenisey River as the ECA continued to deploy their Liveni units in growing numbers. Unlike the Sutherlands, which Britannia fielded, the Liveni was described as the first general purpose knightmare frame built by the ECA without the help of the Indian Republic. At the same time, the APA's continued troubles in Central China grew as Tianzi's proclamation for a general amnesty for all PLA soldiers who chose to defect. Political commissars as usual, executed the would-be defectors but a new anti-communist Special Detachment units hunted down and enacted reprisals against the captured political commissars and their families.

The first cracks within the Black Knights appeared during the First Assault on Tokyo Settlement when Zero mysteriously disappeared, but not before appointing Kane to take command of the Black Knights. While Britannia was preoccupied with the assault by the Black Knights, Krasnoyarsk and nearby other towns were taken by the ECA, leading to the gradual retreat of the Britannian forces. With Kane in command, the first phase of the Black Rebellion continued on until Emperor Charles authorized the general withdrawal of all Britannian troops from Siberia in order to reinforce their positions in Japan, allowing the ECA to recapture lost territory. At the same time, the Russian contingent forces within the ECA also moved to relieve the German and Austro-Hungarian defenders busy fighting off Britannian attempts to capture Hamburg.

While the First Black Rebellion was suppressed by Britannian forces, Australasia took advantage of Britannia's distraction by increasing their armament shipments to the South American separatists to the extent where they are able to score some minor victories over the increasingly overstretched Britannian forces. Simultaneously, Australasia embarked on an island hopping campaign to clear out Britannian units out of every single island in Britannian Polynesia. At the same time, Australasian agents had infiltrated Tianzi's provisional government in Nanjing by installing pro-Australasian sympathizers inside her government. By the time Britannia was ready to finally finish off the APA, half of its members had defected to the Indian-Australasian camp and half of Iran had been occupied by the ECA.

Unwilling to hold a truce between Britannia and the ECA, Schneizel intended to push forward with the arranged marriage between Tianzi and Odysseus but the pro-Australasian faction foiled the marriage plot. Moreover, Tianzi was overthrown for the second time, and this time the coup against her was masterminded by General Chun-huang Leang, or the Tigress General. A former PLA officer who grew disillusioned with the hypocrisy of the communist regime, the Tigress General declared China a republic and banished her from her homeland for the first time since retaking the Chinese state from the PLA. Finally, General Leang also announced that China is joining the Indian-Australasian camp.

An uneasy coalition is starting to build up between the emerging republican faction of China, India and Australasia and the Eurasian Continental Alliance, which was still a de jure alliance of monarchies that might not be as autocratic as Britannia, but still possess anti-democratic biases. Yet this uneasiness would lead to the proposal of drafting a treaty that will witness the creation of the United Federation of Nations, the first international organization dedicated to solving problems that most nations have with each other. The ECA didn't disband and joined the UFN until after the war was over, by which time the seeds were being planted for a new Cold War.

An agreement was finally made on how the UFN is planning to defeat Britannia: the Black Knights (with a couple ECA divisions) would liberate Japan while the rest of the ECA forces will launch an amphibious invasion of the Britannian homeland. Since Australasia already has new allies in South America, Australasian bombers have begun to launch air attacks on the Britannian homeland, with ECA warplanes also attacking Britannian industrial centers in coordination with the Australasians.

The last months of the anti-Britannian UFN counter-offensive already ran into problems: the long, simmering tensions within the Black Knights finally erupted when Zero is outed as the long lost Prince of Britannia, Lelouch vi Britannia. The pro-Zero faction (mainly consisted of ex-Provisional GLA members who also followed Kane) condemned the attempted coup launched by disillusioned members (though bribed by Schneizel and Cornelia shortly before the sudden death of Charles zi Britannia and the breakout of the Second War of Britannian Succession). Like the GLA before them, the Black Knights also split up, with the pro-Zero (in reality, Kane loyalists) faction suddenly siding with the newly installed Emperor Lelouch in January of 2019 a.t.b..

Lelouch's ascension was widely condemned by the majority of the Britannian imperial family, but he managed to rally enough soldiers who were desperate enough to support whichever candidate that would uphold the legacy of Maximillian pi Britannia. In addition, he also turned to his old friend and advisor Yuri, who now provided enough technology to build up his own army to counter other potential claimants on the throne. Both the ECA and the other members of the UFN agreed that whoever emerges on top should be the one to face total defeat at the hands of both the ECA and the UFN. Unfortunately, the Kane loyalists within the Black Knights merged with the Britannian military regiments loyal to Lelouch, proving to be far more dangerous adversaries to the UFN.

To the additional dismay and grief of the UFN, the Second War of Britannian Succession became more of a one sided fiasco for Lelouch's adversaries. Odysseus unsurprisingly proved to be inadequate to rule his own domains (additionally helped by Lelouch sending his agents to undermine his oldest brother's authority there) while Carine was killed in an ECA bombing raid while inspecting her own soldiers in her provisional capital of Yellowknife. Unfortunately, both the Knights of the Round and Schneizel would form an informal alliance to stop Lelouch from reunifying the Holy Britannian Empire. Even more so, the ECA finally decided to launch a counter-invasion of the Britannian homeland against the UFN's wishes, creating another cause for the emerging Cold War between the autocratic North and democratic South.

Guinevere su Britannia fared the worst of all the anti-Lelouch coalition: her domains were invaded by a joint Australasian-South American force intending to stop Lelouch from consolidating his control over Odysseus's domains. In fact, her own army was obliterated in the first few hours of the Australasian invasion of Central America and the end result was that Australasia and the South American nations decided to form another Republic out of Guinevere's fallen empire: the Republic of Balboa, named after Vasco de Balboa who discovered Panama. Meanwhile, Chinese forces launched an amphibious invasion of Hawaii with the help of the Russian Navy and seized the islands after a two week struggle that saw most Britannian soldiers massacred. From Hawaii, the Britannian West Coast became prime targets for the invasion force.

Intending to stop Lelouch any further, Schneizel offered to surrender his army and government to the ECA in exchange for their support in stopping Lelouch, but the ECA only repeated the UFN's demand to him: only an unconditional surrender will be acceptable, without any conditions whatsoever. Fearing the worst reprisals, Schenizel accepted and the ECA symbolically hoisted the two flags on top of his capital in Halifax, Nova Scotia: the flag of the UFN and the flag of the ECA on top of the Britannian Imperial Palace. Furious at Schneizel's actions, Lelouch turned the full fury of his forces towards the entity held by the Knights of the Round: Alaska. Alaska became a three way war zone between the UFN, the Knights of the Round themselves and the surviving Knight orders of former Euro-Britannia and Lelouch loyalists. After a grueling campaign, Alaska fell by September of 2019 a.t.b..

The final push towards Pendragon was something that Schneizel was personally proud of, having aided the UFN in where they should strike. Pendragon itself became a war zone, with UFN and Lelouch loyalist soldiers fighting to the bitter end. Continuous bombing sorties didn't stop Lelouch from inflicting more casualties upon the invaders, but even he cannot hold on any longer as his decision to relocate the capital from Pendragon to Dallas was seen as a desperate move. Pendragon finally fell on February of 2020 a.t.b. as the UFN and ECA flags were hoisted for good in the Britannian Imperial Palance.

The Third Great World War that started in 2010 a.t.b. until 2020 a.t.b., was finally over. The Peace Agreement of Tokyo confirmed the official rise of the UFN and the territorial losses of the Britannian Empire saw all of the conquered Areas liberated and the former autonomous duchies occupied. The interim borders of the breakaway entities that emerged during the Second War of Britannian Succession became the borders of the occupational zones: Carine and Schneizel's domains were occupied by the former ECA (with the responsibility shifting towards Germany alone) while Odysseus's former domain becoming an Australasian-South American occupation zone, the Pacific Northwest being occupied by mainly Chinese, Indian and Russian troops and Lelouch's domain becoming a contested zone that ultimately became the core of Britannia's successor state, the Continental Federated States of Britannia, a puppet Republican state awarded to General Ben Carville (and later on Redmond Boyle) as his personal fiefdom.

Pretty much, and it will only get more difficult as Lelouch and Schneizel both end up duking it out against each other. The other members of the imperial family are going to become high priority targets for the UFN, and the only other surviving Imperial family member other than those two would be Nunnally and Cornelia.

For Nunnally, my guess would be that she will definitely be used by the UFN as a much better alternative candidate to either one of the two claimants on the throne of Britannia, provided that the UFN hasn't succeeded in transforming it into a republic or thought of reforming the constitutional monarchy (Cornelia might also have a claim, but she's also qualified to turn New Strathclyde into her own independent domain as the potential claimant on the New Strathclydese throne, and she would be backed by Britannia's surviving Knight orders like her own Glaston Knights and even potentially the Glinda Knights).

In the potential Cold War of this map, it might be divided between the autocratic North vs democratic South instead of East vs West divide.
