Finally some new stuff to show!This is a matte for a project for Luke Keith. You can check his site
Mainly painted and some images from sxc.hu used for the clouds and textures. Stars created mainly in photoshop.

except for having defined and recognizable continents it reminds me of a theory that the earth was involved in a massive collision that first created the moon. it kind of reminds me of what the aftermath of that collision may have looked like.
The image looks very real and is rather disturbing. it looks like something took a huge bite like the planet was an apple or (of course) an explosion so massive tore a hole in it...or maybe the moon fell inward and hit the planet? i can't remember if scientists think the moon will fall inward or fly outward when it's orbit decays. 
Very haunting and frightening.

Hehe, did you used NASA or Google Earth images? Or its 3D?

I used a stone image of sxc.hu as a base for the texture xDD and a portion of an earth satellite plane map for south america, and then desaturated and espherized it in photoshop. I then went by painting the water and the chunk, and I finally added some stock clouds from sxc.hu. So it's mainly painted in Photoshop
