I must apologize! I was so distracted by your color project that I didn't visit your
gallery for a while. (And now I am wondering what the 12 colors will be and how difficult it must
be to focus so tightly.)
This photo, I came back to several times, but I wasn't quite sure how to explain how I felt about
it. It is very evocative for me not just because of the tonality and the composition (the panoramic
feel of the horizontal field of vision). There is a strong thematic quality: the foreground is barren -- dirt.
Life comes out of it in the next layer, and then there is the suggestion of grass after that in the next
layer. And then, after that, in the mist, is the suggestion of civilization. The buildings, and then the
electrical towers, which mirror the trees in a negative way. They are obscured by a mist, which I don't
know -- is it pollution (caused by technology) or is is fog (caused by nature)? The coloration is depressing,
but with just a hint of optimism, and that is what makes all of this linger in my memory.
The title of this piece is wonderful because it is both descriptive and suggestive -- the horizon is in the
distance ahead of us in terms of vision and time. A bleak reference to the future, but perhaps the future
is not entirely real yet? (A negative reading would suggest the full circle -- beyond the technology is
another band of barren earth.)
