Description It is said the first settlers of Tawhandoa feared the living suns. Exiles of another realm, they came to make their home on the dark side of the system's only world. Without strength enough to go further, nor courage enough to commune with the Lantern Star, they consigned themselves to a minuscule existence, on isles suspended above bottomless skies of the gas giant. Upon these isles, the Exiles built curious city-scapes, shaped after images of colonies one might find on terrestrial worlds, but seldom in the stormy layers of a Jovian. Perhaps they were trying to recapture a lost home. Perhaps they were enraptured with visions of a future they could never reach. Nothing but their great architecture, and rare murals yet remains of their memory.
One way or another, their cities never grew beyond that beginning, forever monuments to a strange lineage of humanity, coming to an unceremonious end on a yet unnamed world.

Indeed, Tawhandoa would not be known by that name for many centuries after the last city of the settlers fell silent. They were all uninhabited by the beginning of the oldest continuous chronicles of surviving civilizations.
Much like their arrival and ambitions, the ultimate fate of the Exiles is a mystery. Their cities remained intact after the disappearance of their architects, without traces of strife, plague, or war. They were resettled again by other lineages and clans, some destroyed, some rebuilt, many expanded upon. By now, many are inclined to view the Exiles as a long-forgotten legend, a chapter of history ended and done. But some believe the journey of the exiles continued, deeper into the clouds of Tawhandoa as if they sought to hide ever deeper from the gaze of the stars.

The very largest of the known Exile cities had towers reaching not only up, but down. Spires plunging into deeper layers of the world. If the Exiles descended further down, nobody ever followed. However, there are rumors of much younger artifacts, wreckages, and materials sometimes washing up in upstream winds of particularly powerful storms. Such finds always cause much speculation, and fantastical tales of the Exile's continuing survival.
