Description

Like most regions out in deep space, the Reach is neither defined by astronomical features nor any static borders set down on the charts. It broadly encompasses the expanse between outlying nebulae drifting core-war, and the outer habitable zone of the system. Shared characteristics of the denser interplanetary medium, energy surges, and flourishing bio-forms are used to mark the Reach during every season, shifting according to yearly changes.

Each trawling run begins with the long stretch seeking out a part of the Reach in full bloom, where concentrations are high enough for a successful harvest. Because the blooming swarms of microscopic forms coalesce in unpredictable patterns, and are hardly noticeable on scans before their bloom reaches critical mass, the search for the right opportunity can take up weeks, even months on end. During that time, the ship and her crew face the challenge of remaining at utmost readiness, on the off-chance that the right circumstances spontaneously arise. Their task is made more difficult by the competition among guilds, bonds, and trawlers, each looking to secure the riches of the Reach for their own.
